News from the world of applications

Pinterest bought Instapaper (23.)

Instapaper was one of the first apps that could save articles from the web for later offline access. It has now been given a new home for the second time since its inception. In 2013, the application was bought by Betaworks, and in the past week it moved under the wings of Pinterest. Although Pinteres is characterized by more visual content, it already introduced bookmarks for articles in 2013. It's not yet clear how exactly Instapaper will benefit Pinterest, but Instapaper's technology is intended to help develop this aspect of Pinterest. Pinterest management only said that the goal of the collaboration is to "enhance the discovery and storage of articles on Pinterest." But Instapaper will continue to be available as a standalone app.

John Gruber's Vesper Ends (23/8)

The Vesper app was introduced in 2013, when it presented itself as a more capable version of the built-in "Notes". It kept this status more or less throughout its existence, but "Notes" gradually acquired additional functions and capabilities, and Vesper was one of the more expensive applications of its type, so it relied more on the well-known names of its creators, John Gruber, Brent Simmons and Dave Wiskus. But now it has reached the point where it is not able to earn enough money for its further development.

The app is now available for free, but will stop syncing on August 30th and will disappear from the App Store on September 15th. Also, starting on August 30th, all data will be deleted, so the latest version of Vesper includes a section for easy expoprt.

According to the new terms of use, WhatsApp will share some data with Facebook (25/8)

WhatsApp's terms of use were updated on Thursday. Fortunately, they do not contain anything that could lead, for example, to the enslavement of their users, but the changes are not banal either. WhatsApp will share some data with Facebook. The reasons are the improvement of services, a better fight against spam and, of course, also targeted advertising. Users don't have to worry about the content of the messages, as it is end-to-end encrypted (no one but the sender and recipient can read it) and the phone numbers of WhatsApp users will not be shared with Facebook or advertisers.

Users do not have to agree to the new conditions and can change their decision within thirty days even if they did not read them the first time and "changed their mind".

As early as September 2, we may learn about the future of Duke Nukem (August 26)

The 3 game Duke Nukem 1996D is undoubtedly one of the most iconic games of all time. In 2011, its sequel, Duke Nukem Forever, was released, which was a disappointment for almost everyone. Since then, not much has happened around the game series, but now the game's official website has a happy 20th anniversary wish, a countdown, until September 2nd at 3:30 in the morning, and links to Facebook, Twitter a Instagram. It is not clear what will happen at the end of the countdown, but of course there is speculation about big things.

New applications

Ramme presents Instagram as it is on the desktop

There are countless desktop Instagram browsers, but the one from Danish developer Terkelg called "Remme" still has the potential to become a favorite. Its strategy is not to try to attract users with exotic user interface and functions, but to provide an experience as close as possible to the one that users already know well from their mobile devices. Ramme's main window is shaped like a vertical rectangle, most of which is dedicated to content. It is displayed exactly the same as in the Instagram mobile application. Unlike it, the bar with social network sections is located on the left, instead of below. However, the icons are still the same and perform the same function.

The Remme app is freely available on GitHub and anyone capable of it can contribute to its development. The source code based on the Electron platform is also available on the same website.

Important update

Prisma has learned to apply filters even without the Internet

Popular application Prisma for photo editing has received a significant update, thanks to which you no longer need an Internet connection to apply a filter. It was the dependence on the Internet that was by far Prisma's biggest weakness, and also the reason why the application was often slow and unreliable. Every time a photo was processed, the application communicated with the developers' servers, which were forever overloaded due to the unexpected popularity of the application. Now the technology working with neural networks is present directly in the application, so it is not necessary to send the data elsewhere for analysis. However, not all filters are available in offline mode yet.

Twitter finally comes with a night mode on the iPhone

After testing on Android and in beta, night mode is coming Twitter even on the iPhone. So if you now head to the "Me" tab and tap the gear icon, you should be able to manually activate the eye-friendly dark mode. However, the function has not spread to all users in the meantime, and the less fortunate will have to wait a few more days or even weeks.
