Services connected to iCloud suffered a large-scale outage during the past week. Apple has released an update to the iOS 17.4 developer beta, AirPods firmware, and Apple Music has started mapping this year's playback history.

iCloud outage

Around the middle of the past week, some services from Apple experienced a rather large outage. It was the third outage in four days, and the iCloud website, Mail on iCloud, Apple Pay and other services were affected. Roughly an hour after user complaints began to spread massively on the Internet, the outage was also confirmed on Apple's System Status Page, but a little later everything was fine again.

New firmware for AirPods Max

Owners of Apple's AirPods Max wireless headphones received a new firmware update last week. On Tuesday, Apple released a new AirPods Max firmware coded 6A324. This is an improvement over the 6A300 version that was released in September. Apple has not provided any detailed release notes for the firmware update. The notes only say that the update is focused on bug fixes and general improvements. The new firmware is installed automatically for users and there is no mechanism available to manually force the update. The firmware will install itself if the AirPods are connected to an iOS or macOS device.

iOS 17.4 beta 1 update

Apple also updated the developer beta version of its iOS 17.4 operating system during the week. Public betas usually appear shortly after developer releases, and public participants can sign up via the website or native Settings. The changes in iOS 17.4 cover a number of areas, the main ones being changes to the App Store to comply with the EU Digital Markets Act. There are changes in native Music and Podcasts, for example, support for game streaming apps has also been added, and of course new emoji.

Apple Music launches Replay 2024

The company has made the Replay 2024 playlist available to Apple Music subscribers, thanks to which they can start watching all the songs they streamed this year. As in previous years, this playlist ranks a total of 100 songs based on how many times users have listened to them. By the end of the year, the playlist will provide users with an overview of their music history for the entire past year. Once you've listened to enough music to build a playlist, you'll find it at the bottom of the Play tab in Apple Music on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. A more detailed version of the data tracking feature is also available in Apple Music for the web, including the most streamed artists and albums, and detailed statistics for the number of plays and hours listened to.
