China's current number one hit - the gold iPhone. The new iPads could come with a significantly better camera, the iPhone 5s is the best-selling phone in the United States, and competition is expected for Amazon's Apple TV. Apple week number 40 is here…

Gold iPhone 5s craze in China (September 30)

If someone didn't like the move with the gold iPhone, then the current frenzy in China, where the gold version of the iPhone 5s is going crazy, must have given them a clear answer. Gold is even so popular that gold stickers have become a hit, which make iPhones of other colors even gold, for just a few crowns. This is welcomed both by socially weaker customers who would not have an expensive new phone, and also by those who do not want to wait for a gold iPhone, because that is a scarce commodity.

"Dear, you don't have to sell your kidney for a new iPhone," reads one of the ads that perfectly characterizes the current situation. "Instead of paying 5288 yuan (the retail price of a 16GB iPhone 5s in China is 16 crowns), just spend 620 yuan (about 35 crowns) to make your iPhone 110 look like a gold iPhone 5s in seconds." Stores confirm that they sell thousands of such stickers.

Toronto Blue Jays baseball team Jay Sartori joins Apple (30/9)

Apple got an interesting reinforcement in its ranks when it lured the current assistant general manager Jay Sartori from the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team. At Apple, Sartori will take responsibility for the App Store section, more precisely the sports section, in which he should feel like a fish in water. Sartori has worked on various statistical systems and software development.

iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 could come with 8-megapixel rear camera (2/10)

Apple never dealt with the cameras in iPads too much, or rather did not give them such importance and equipped them with components with worse parameters than in iPhones of the same age. However, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple's upcoming tablets — the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 — could get an 8-megapixel rear camera with a higher aperture than the current f/2.4 and 5-megapixel cameras on iPads. If the predictions come true, it would be similar to the iPhone 5s. We could also expect some new functions on iPads, such as taking slow-motion video.

In the United States, the iPhone 5s rules the carriers (October 4)

The iPhone 5s dominated the September sales charts for all four major US carriers. It was the best-selling phone on AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile. The color iPhone 5c also held high, coming in second place with AT&T and Sprint, with only the Samsung Galaxy S4 surpassing it with the other two carriers. It was Samsung that held first place in the previous three months.

Amazon should introduce competition for Apple TV (4/10)

According to The Wall Street Journal, Amazon is preparing to attack the holiday season with its own set-top box to compete with Apple TV and other devices that stream video. Amazon's new device should run apps and content from a variety of sources, including Prime. Amazon would like to bring the device into living rooms and make it easier for customers to watch content.

There was talk of a similar device earlier this year, but at the time it was speculated that Amazon would only provide its own content. Now it seems that he should deal with different content providers to make his offer as diverse as possible. However, it is not yet clear about the price or the exact release date.

New iPhone 4S, 5c, and 5s Tips & Tricks section on Apple.com (4/10)

Apple has published three new and very useful sections on its website called "Tips and Tricks" that provide useful tips and tricks for new features in iOS 7 and the new iPhones. Tips cover photography, gestures, FaceTime, Siri, calendar, and more and more apps. Unfortunately, not a single section has yet been translated into Czech, in contrast to a much more detailed one iPhone manuals.

Scott Forstall could testify in the renewed trial of Apple vs. Samsung (4/10)

In November, the battle between Apple and Samsung will again flare up in the courtroom. Judge Lucy Kohová will decide on the new amount of compensation, because according to her, the jury may have originally calculated the amount incorrectly due to a misunderstanding of the patent disputes. In court, there could be an interesting meeting of former colleagues, because in addition to Phil Schiller, senior vice president of global marketing, the list of those who can testify also includes Scott Forstall, the former head of iOS, who was dismissed from Apple at the end of last year.

In short:

  • 1. 10.: Apple should have iOS 7.0.3 in intensive internal testing. Rumor has it that a major part of the new operating software update should be a fix for the iMessage sending issue.
  • 3. 10.: Cupertino's planning commission has approved Apple's plans for the company's new spaceship-like campus. The next step will be a vote by the city council on October 15 and a possible final approval of the project on November 19. That still leaves 2016 for a potential new campus opening.
