Hi, I had geekbench 3 tryout 32-bit with El Capitan 10.11.6 single-core 2968b and multi-core 11634b with Sierra 10.12 single-core 3040 and multi-core 11738, I work on Macbook Pro 2012 non retina :) .. hang on it's too early to judge the battery, but time shows me similar to El Capitan..
So far, I have noticed that if I download the app from the appstore, the status is no longer displayed in the launchpad icon, nor is it in the quick menu until it is installed

I always have a USB stick with the installer of the current OS X (macOS) with me. And if anything happens, I can start installing anytime, anywhere, and in any amount. I don't need internet, wifi access, anything like that. Why download approx. 5GB again every time you reinstall, if it's enough once? However, you will only fully appreciate the charm of this method if you manage more than one Mack and not just play with one... ;)

The point is that I have an iPhone 6s 128GB and a Lenovo laptop with a 120GB SSD, so I can't back up there and for God's sake I can't back up directly to an external drive. So I think I'll make a backup at my friend's Mac and then copy it to the 1 TB external drive.

To be honest, I always install new macOS as a clean install and then reinstall the apps. If you're going to upgrade, I'd check where macOS stores temporary files after the cash upgrade to see if there's anything there. I see I made a mistake, I have Parallels 11 and it offers me an upgrade to 12 which is optimized for Sierra. I am currently using win 8.1 in a virtual environment, as the DentalDesigner program does not yet work on win 10. So will Parallels 11 with win 8.1 work for me on Mac OS Sierra? :)
Make a complete backup, I think Apple also recommends it, and then happily do it. Parallels 11 worked for me already in the Sierra Beta program, only security patches will be released on Win 8.1, but nothing that will change the system's functionality.

I finally succeeded in installing older Adobe applications on Sierra, specifically Adobe CS6. If Lightroom 4 matches it, you should be good to go. If you leave me the installer somewhere, I can test it in a virtual one that I have prepared for these purposes... Unfortunately, I only have Lightroom version 6 myself... ;)

Generally speaking: Virtualbox is a virtualizer, i.e. a layer between macOS and Windows. If the virtualizer is fine, the virtualized system must be fine. I personally have experience with VirtualBox 5.1.4 and 5.1.6 and have not experienced any problems on macOS Sierra betas or GM (build 16A320). Again, I'll ask the obligatory question, is there anything compelling you to switch to macOS Sierra? If you have an ElCapitan, I don't think there is any need to rush…
Regarding virtualization, I don't know what went wrong, but Sierra runs beautifully, but running WIN10 in VMWare is "zero points". The wheel spins for about 10 minutes, then the message "Internal error" and the end.
Hello, am I the only one whose computer practically does not work after the update? I switched from El Capitan, I have an iMac at the end of 2013, I hardly use the computer's memory, we have a server where we store practically everything, so I have a lot of free space. I recommend this procedure: Make a USB installer. Disconnect from Mack everything that does not need to be connected (second display). Clean installation, data recovery, reinstallation of applications, connection of peripherals... When moving to a new "major" version of the OS, it pays off for a number of reasons. Years of experience confirmed.
I did that too. With OSX I did it until 10.7, since then I just upgrade and so far (knock, knock), everything works as it should...
I just switched to user mode and it suits me very well :-)
Edit: the only thing I do after the upgrade is the PRAM reset...
Mode user = let your guard down. And the most dangerous thing of all is the false sense of security… :D … I can imagine it's one version away, but I still find it easier to upgrade once and for all than to deal with problems, not sure what caused them - and end up having to clean anyway do a reinstall. And if one has order in the data and some meaningful structure on the disks, even a clean installation + recovery is relatively fast... Not to mention a good feeling... ;)
I know you're right, but I realized I'm on a *NIX system (OK a *BSD system) and I've never had a problem there (I'm not just talking about OSX, but servers and their "inter-version" upgrade). I admit, every year there is a certain percentage of users who eventually have to do a clean install of OSX, in any case, it is better for me personally if I upgrade straight away and clean the PRAM, if it doesn't take up the cache and in older versions if it doesn't help, they were still repaired permissions although I noticed that the cache gets wiped straight after installation.
I have structured data, but restoring the 250GB of data will take about an hour when I have a disk connected via USB, I admit that a scenario could be done in the first round of restoring documents, basic applications, which would take a maximum of 20 minutes and then overnight let the rest go, but I would either have to script it myself or look for software that would do it for me, even if it would only be enough to correctly parameterize 2-3 rsync commands.
In summary, it's definitely partly my laziness, but also the belief that the OS should serve me and not me him, and I'm not on Windows, even though it's probably improved a lot over the years :-) And yes, I'm able to bear the consequences, so if something doesn't work for me, it's not Apple's problem, it's because I didn't do a clean install.
There is no objection to this approach, it is really mainly a matter of personal preference. Regarding upgrades between versions, perhaps just a note that certainly not all "*NIXs" (server) manage this without any problems. The need to work on multiple (laptop) computers and thus be able to easily keep the entire "tree" up-to-date on an external disk with a mirror in the cloud led me to structured data. Since the "core apps" I use are really only a few, this isn't a big deal either. So, about once every year or two, I simply clean the Mac perfectly during the reinstallation. Otherwise, I agree one hundred percent with the thesis that one should not be a slave to one's OS (I'm still in a difficult situation compared to "wokners") and therefore I would plead with Apple for a longer cycle of "total" renewal (upgrade) of macOS. I'd much rather see a more elaborate system of partial upgrades, keeping the core of the system and more frequent (minor) security patches. For building a company's image and marketing, you can certainly find much more suitable products than an operating system... ;)

It's been a long time since I've seen such a problem-free new software from Apple. Both iOS10 and macOS Sierra, both installed on hw from 2013 and both run like new devices. Actually, after the previous years (iOS 8 and 9 and OS X Yosemite), I didn't even expect a change. Wow, Apple has returned to the Snow Leopard era, and that's a good thing. This is how we like Apple. I'm talking less about diversity and more about quality software.
Yosemite was a bummer, which was to be expected. Few people can handle so many changes at once. ElCapitan (which I personally consider to be Yosemite ServicePack1 ;) ) was already cool from the start, although of course not without bugs. I've been testing Sierra since the first DP on a wide variety of hardware (even not quite Apple ;) ) and I can't help but agree. When it comes to the OS, Apple should pay attention to long-term stability and continuity - I don't think that launching a "new" version of macOS every year is the best way to go in the field of operating systems... ;)

i installed a new sierra system and had significant problems this morning. I'm using Synology external storage. I always share this and it worked without a problem on the el-Captain OS. Now I can share, I can see all the data and I can work with it, in the sense of copying, opening. The problem occurs when I open a file in numbers, pages or preview and want to save it to this storage. The computer starts working, an unpleasant colored wheel appears and after about 5 minutes it tells me that the file cannot be saved. We use data storage across our network to store data at my accounting firm, so we can't do without it. Anyone familiar with this, please help? The same problem is with all computers, so I believe that the age of the computer does not affect it. It seems to me that the connection is canceled after some time, or after an unsuccessful save of the file, and I have to connect again, but usually it doesn't work.
