Apple on Friday unveiled new emoji designs that could appear in one of its upcoming "smiley palette" updates. The new types of emoticons focus on the representation of people who have some form of disability. The new proposals were reviewed by the Unicode Consortium, which deals with (among other things) the form of emoticons and publishes new types every year. The proposals presented by Apple could thus appear in practice as early as next year.

In a new document in which Apple suggests some brand new emojis (and which you can view here), we can find, for example, a guide dog emoticon for the visually impaired, a person with a blind stick, a person with hearing loss or an ear implant indicator. There are also several versions of wheelchairs, prostheses, etc.

In the official statement from Apple, it is stated that they also want to offer disabled users the possibility of better representation with the help of emoticons. The above-mentioned list is not meant to be the final solution, there may be many more smileys depicting different types of disabilities in the final. This is just to serve as a kind of shot for the future.

In addition to better representation of people with disabilities, Apple also hopes that with this move it will be able to fuel the debate about access and coexistence with people with different types of disabilities. This effort goes hand-in-hand with Apple's efforts to accommodate differently-abled users, particularly with its Accessibility mode, which helps differently-abled users interact with their iOS devices.
