We have been hearing about foldable devices, i.e. those with a flexible display, for many years. In fact, many years before Samsung introduced its first Galaxy Z Fold in 2019. At the same time, there is also speculation about when Apple will come out with its flexible iPhone. Now, again, it looks like the flexible iPad will arrive sooner.

Already at the beginning of this year, Ming-Chi Kuo said that he expects the launch of the foldable iPad during 2024. A new report from DigiTimes does not refute this, but it leans more towards 2025, although production should start already the following year. This could mean an introduction in the spring of 2025. Considering the expected price, which will be even higher than the iPad Pro models, it cannot be said that Apple will miss the Christmas season here, as the foldable iPad will not be exactly what many wanted to share under the tree.

Apple has been working on foldable products for four years now, and during that time it has constantly made changes to the design. Everything now indicates that before starting work on a foldable iPhone, the company was planning to release a foldable ‌iPad‌, which is also likely to happen eventually. Apple decided to focus on it because it makes up a relatively small part of the company's revenue, which means that potential problems can be debugged much better than on iPhones, or with less impact and hype around.

Quite logically, the main problem of the upcoming news should be not only the flexible panel, but also the construction of the hinge. After all, everyone is struggling with this, and no one has yet managed to come up with the first generation of a puzzle that would be some kind of ideal standard in this regard. Samsung has succeeded to some extent only now with the 5th generation of Fold and Flip. In addition, there is the unsightly bend of the display, which Apple is also supposed to try to solve so that it is not visible.

Anyone want a flexible iPad? And does anyone even want an iPad?

So Apple's logic seems to be correct. To offer an iPad, which is not expected to sell hot, and try out new technology on it. Only then to miniaturize everything so that he can display it on the iPhone. But it runs into several factors that are not quite ideal. No one wants iPads. Apple itself knows this, which is why it will not give them any new generation this year after 13 years.

The second thing is, why would you even want a flexible iPad? What benefits will it bring to the user? The current sizes seem ideal, especially for those who know what the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra looks like. If such a device were bent in half, it would be more compact in terms of its area, but it would also be stronger. Size is perhaps the only thing, it doesn't matter anywhere else. In addition, the device will have to be opened for any work, you will not see any notifications or anything else on it, unless Apple gives it an external display. And should the iPad even have an external display?

With Fold form factor phones, it makes sense that you use its outer display as a phone and the inner one as a tablet. But an iPad will always be an iPad, whether it's just a flatbread or a bent flatbread. Apple thus invents useless things instead of giving customers what they really want. If you show a flexible Samsung to an Apple fan, he will usually say: "If Apple made it, I'd definitely buy it." So, folding devices are liked, but iPhone users don't want a Samsung (or Google Pixel Fold or Chinese brands), they want a flexible iPhone and not some substitute.

So if the current information is correct and we will see a flexible iPad between late 2024 and early 2025, when will we have to wait for a flexible iPhone? As you can probably guess, we will probably not see it until 2026 at the earliest.
