Handhelds have been on the market since 1989, when Nintendo released its first Gameboy. It became a worldwide hit and sold a total of less than 120 million units. The Gameboy started an era of mobile gaming that is currently at its peak, or perhaps just below it. However, it is not represented by mobile game consoles, but rather by mobile phones and tablets.

Moga game controller for Android.

Ever since Apple opened its App Store in 2008, iOS has inadvertently become a huge gaming platform that has begun to displace the classic players, Sony and Nintendo. Currently, Apple practically dominates the mobile gaming market with its 600 million iOS devices sold, while the dedicated handhelds Playstation Vita and Nintendo 3DS are languishing despite quality titles. Their only salvation was hardcore players who did not allow comfortable physical buttons, D-pads and levers.

They also largely benefited from the fact that there was no standard for game controllers for both iOS and Android. Although there were several attempts, none of them succeeded due to fragmentation and the absence of any standardization. He always supported only a handful of games. But this advantage falls. Apple at WWDC 2013 introduced a framework for game controllers and the desired standard for their manufacturers. And two prominent players, Logitech a Moga, are already preparing the drivers and will be available in the fall, i.e. at the time when iOS 7 will be available for official download and the new iPhone will be introduced. Apple confirmed this in one of its seminars.

This is a big opportunity for developers, as Apple is likely to make games that support physical controllers more visible in the App Store, and big publishers are likely to join the wave. For example, it supports game controllers on Android Moga (pictured above) Gameloft, SEGA, Rockstar Games or Czech Mad Finger Games. It can be expected that others will gradually join this company, for example Electronic Arts or Chillingo.

In some cases, mobile games for iOS can no longer compete with console titles, and thanks to their low price, they are much more affordable, while premium games for PSP Vita cost up to a thousand crowns. Thanks to the support of game controllers, Apple will push out the current handhelds even more and is also working on turning the Apple TV into a full-fledged game console.
