Not long ago, the arrival of the expected competition for the Apple Watch was widely discussed among apple lovers. The company Meta, which had quite big ambitions in this direction and wanted to bring about a number of revolutionary changes, was to come up with its own smart watch. There was even talk that the watch would offer a pair of relatively high-quality cameras. One was to be located on the side with the display and serve for the needs of video calls, while the other would be at the back and even offer Full HD resolution (1080p) with an automatic focus function.

It is therefore not surprising that the concept itself has received quite a lot of attention. Subsequently, however, it turned out that Meta is completely withdrawing from development. The smart watch simply got red. At the time, Meta was facing difficult problems and extensive layoffs, which led to the termination of this project. But that doesn't mean that we won't see the very idea of a smart watch with its own camera. Quite possibly, Apple could be inspired by it.

The new Apple Watch series

As it now turns out, the idea of a smart watch with its own camera is not quite so unique. The Patently Apple portal, which focuses on tracking registered patents, discovered a very interesting registration from 2019. Even then, the Cupertino giant came up with its own patent describing the use of a webcam for smart watches. But it doesn't end there. Apple registered a very similar patent last year, which clearly indicates that it is still playing with the idea. In addition, the camera itself on the apple watch could be a great asset. With its help, the watch could theoretically be used for FaceTime video calls. In addition, when we combine this with models with Cellular connection, we get a completely self-sufficient device for video calls without the need for an iPhone.

On the other hand, it is necessary to mention that the registration of a patent does not mean anything at all. On the contrary, it is quite common for technology giants to register one application after another, although the concepts themselves often do not even see the light of day. The mentioned repeated registration does not even give us practically any certainty. But at least one thing is certain - Apple is at least toying with this idea, and we have to admit that in the end it could be a really interesting device.

Technological barriers

Although this could be a relatively interesting refresh of the Apple Watch, it is necessary to take into account technological limitations and obstacles. The implementation of the camera would understandably take up the necessary space, which is absolutely crucial in the case of such a product. At the same time, the whole situation could have a strongly negative impact on battery life - either through greater consumption or precisely because of the insufficient space that would theoretically have to be taken from the accumulator. As we mentioned above, whether we will ever see an Apple Watch with a camera is uncertain for now. Would you like a watch with a camera, or do you think it's pointless?
