Activity Monitor is a useful utility within the macOS operating system that helps users get an overview of their computer's system resources, performance and consumption, and also allows the management of selected processes. At first glance, the Activity Monitor may seem like a confusing mess of incomprehensible data to novice users, but it can also offer useful information. Activity Monitor can be easily launched through Spotlight, for example, by pressing Cmd + Spacebar to launch Spotlight, and typing "Activity Monitor" into its search field.

CPU activity

One of the parameters that the Activity Monitor can show is the activity and utilization of the CPU, i.e. the processor of your Mac. To view CPU activity, launch Activity Monitor and then click the CPU tab at the top of the application window. In the table at the bottom of the Activity Monitor window, you can then easily see how much CPU capacity is being used by your Mac's system processes (System section), how much capacity is being used by applications currently in use (User section) and how much unused CPU capacity there is (Idle section) . If you click Window in the menu bar at the top of your Mac screen, you can switch between viewing CPU usage or CPU history.

Ending processes in the Activity Monitor

You can also use the native Activity Monitor on your Mac to manage processes, including terminating those that are currently running. Ending a running process in Activity Monitor on Mac is really very simple. Launch Activity Monitor as usual, then click CPU at the top of the application window. In the list of processes, find the one you want to end, point to it with the mouse cursor and click. At the top of the Activity Monitor window, click the wheel icon with a cross, then choose whether you want to simply terminate the running process in the normal way, or whether you want to force it to terminate. The latter variant is usually used in the event that any problems occur with the given process and it is not possible to terminate the process in the normal way.

Spotřeba energy

If you're working on a MacBook and you're only using battery power at a given moment, you'll surely be interested in which of the active processes have the biggest impact on battery consumption. You can check the consumption by starting the Activity Monitor and clicking on the Consumption tab at the top of the window. At the bottom of the window, you can get an overview of how much each process affects your Mac's battery consumption over time, and you can also find out when your computer was last fully charged, what percentage of battery you have left, or how long mains power is in progress. If you would like to end one of the active processes in this window, proceed as in the paragraph above, i.e. click on the name of the process and then click on the wheel icon with a cross in the upper part of the window.

Real time tracking

The Activity Monitor application on your Mac also allows you to monitor relevant parameters in real time by clicking the icon in the Dock at the bottom of your Mac screen. How to do it? Start Activity Monitor, right-click on its icon in the Dock and select Keep in Dock in the menu. Then right-click on the icon again, select Icon in Dock and finally specify which of the offered parameters you want to monitor.
