Augmented reality is very difficult to explain using text, it is much easier to show it using video. And that's exactly what happened with the LIDAR scanner, which is one of the new features of the iPad Pro 2020. With this scanner, developers have new options for using ARKit.

In the three-minute long video, which was probably created for the purpose of the keynote, we see several developers presenting augmented reality in games and applications. The LIDAR scanner creates an accurate 3D map of the surroundings up to a distance of five meters outside and inside. It works by counting the time it takes for the laser to reach the object and bounce back into the scanner. The result is the exact distance of the iPad from individual objects.

Mark Laprairie, the creator of the game Hot Lava uses a LIDAR scanner in his living room in a video to show how it can improve more than just his game. First, it scans the room and the game generates hot lava and obstacles to jump according to it. And in such a way that the beginning and the end are on the couch. Hot Lava is currently available on Apple Arcade.

In addition, Apple showed other impressive uses of the scanner. For example, the Shapr3D application creates a 3D model of a room, and the user can then add new objects to the room in exact sizes, including walls. In another demo, you can see an anatomy app called Complete Anatomy that can measure the range of motion of someone's arm.
