Even though Apple keeps trying to deny it, the iPad is hardly a substitute for a Mac. It works, yes, but with compromises. At the same time, the limitations of iPadOS are to blame for everything. However, it is true that with accessories such as the Magic Keyboard, you can at least get closer to the experience of a full-fledged macOS. Now, information has leaked that Apple is preparing another external keyboard for future iPads, and we ask: "Isn't it pointless?"

It's true that Apple hasn't updated the Magic Keyboard since 2020. On the other hand, there really wasn't a reason to when the iPads that support it still have the same chassis with a fully compatible keyboard (namely the Smart Keyboard Folio for the 11" iPad Pro and iPad Air 4th and 5th generation). However, users are clamoring for improvements, at least a larger trackpad. On the one hand, yes, if you want to get even more out of the iPad, on the other hand, it sounds like a waste if the upgrade should be so small and only in this respect.

One keyboard to rule them all

Who else but Bloomberg's Mark Gurman mentions that next year we're in for the biggest iPad upgrade since 2018. It's likely that we'll get a new chassis, and with that comes the fact that it'll also require new body-conforming accessories . This should be logically introduced with the new range of iPads, which for many without a full-fledged keyboard do not make sense. According to available information, not only the trackpad is to be enlarged in some way, but backlit keys are also to arrive. It clearly follows that the iPad keyboard will try to get closer to the MacBook - not only in terms of options but also in appearance.

The MacBook's keyboard is now highly praised, so this seems like a fairly logical move. But why re-invent something that is actually already here? Why not give up on inventing innovations of the existing one and simply not take the "body" of the MacBook, where instead of the display will be an iPad, and it doesn't matter what kind? Just one universal solution for everyone.

For a greener planet

Although we have information here that the iPad is to be fundamentally redesigned, why would the new keyboard have to be used only with new models? Why not make something truly universal that can be used across models and generations? In addition, if Apple is playing on ecology as it mentions, it would certainly make more sense. After all, in this regard, its biggest rival Samsung has now encountered, which presented a series of Galaxy Tab S9 tablets.

One of the biggest environmental problems today is e-waste. Although we can work together to solve it, for example by using devices longer, replacing batteries, or recycling our old devices, companies must also contribute to this. But the Galaxy Tab S9 is about half a millimeter longer, half a millimeter taller and less than half a millimeter thicker than its predecessor. Due to the very similar dimensions, the keyboard for the Galaxy Tab S8 should theoretically fit on it as well. Technically speaking, the docks for the Tab S8 fit the new tablet "plus minus", however, after connecting and starting to type, you will receive a warning that these products are not compatible. You can throw away a keyboard for 4 thousand CZK and have to buy a new one. We simply do not want a similar strategy from Apple, and we can only hope that its brilliant engineers will come up with something that could be used in the company's wider portfolio.
