A lot was packed into the two-hour keynote at this year's WWDC 2016. However, iOS 10 took up the most time – as expected. The mobile operating system is the most important of all for Apple due to the sales of iPhones and iPads, and according to Craig Federighi, head of development, it is the biggest update ever.
The news in iOS 10 is truly blessed, during the keynote Apple presented only the main ten of them, we will learn about others only in the following days and weeks, but usually it is nothing revolutionary, but rather minor improvements to current functions, or cosmetic changes.
More options on the lock screen
Users with iOS 10 will feel a completely new experience immediately from the lock screen, thanks to the "Raise to Wake" function, which wakes up the iPhone immediately after picking it up without the need to press any button. Apple implements this function mainly due to the very fast Touch ID of the second generation. On the latest iPhones, users usually don't even have time to notice what notifications are waiting for them on the locked screen after putting their finger on it.
Now, to light up the display - and therefore display notifications - it will be enough to pick up the phone. Only when you're done with notifications will you unlock it via Touch ID. After all, the notifications have undergone both a graphic and a functional transformation. They will now offer more detailed content and thanks to 3D Touch you will be able to react to them or work with them directly from the locked screen. For example, to messages or invitations in the calendar.
Developers can use the magic of Siri. As well as users
The Czech user once again looked a little sad at the part of the presentation regarding Siri in iOS 10. Although Siri will visit two new countries this year, we are not very pleased with either Ireland or South Africa. And even less so, because for the first time ever, Apple is opening up the voice assistant to third-party developers who can implement it in their applications. Siri now communicates with, for example, WhatsApp, Slack or Uber.
In addition, Siri will not only be a voice assistant in iOS 10, but her learning abilities and Apple technology will also be used in the keyboard. Based on its artificial intelligence, it will suggest words that you probably want to write when you type. But it won't work again with Czech.
Organizing photos like Google and better Maps
Another new feature in iOS 10 is the photos area. Apple has implemented recognition technology into its native Photos app that can quickly organize photos into collections (called "Memories") based on a given object. A clever feature, but not a revolutionary one – Google Photos has been working on a very similar principle for some time. Nevertheless, the organization and browsing of photos should be clearer and more efficient in iOS 10 thanks to this.
Apple also paid great attention to its Maps. Progress on a previously very weak application can be seen regularly, and in iOS 10 it will move forward again. Both the user interface and some smaller functions have been improved, such as zooming in navigation mode or more displayed information during navigation.
But the biggest innovation in Maps is probably the integration of third-party applications. Thanks to this, you can, for example, reserve a table at your favorite restaurant only within Maps, then order a ride and pay for it - all without having to leave the Maps application. However, since even public transport data does not work properly in the Czech Republic, the integration of third-party applications will probably not be that effective either.
Home and whole house control from iOS 10
HomeKit has been around as a smart home platform for a while, but it wasn't until iOS 10 that Apple was going to make it really visible. In iOS 10, every user will discover the new Home application, from which it will be possible to control the complete household, from light bulbs to the entrance door to appliances. Smart home control will be possible from iPhone, iPad and Watch.
Missed call text transcription and significant changes to iMessage
The new version of iOS comes with a text transcription of a missed call, which is stored in the voicemail, and improved incoming call recognition technology that tells users whether it is most likely to be spam or not. In addition, the Phone opens up to third-party applications, so even calls via WhatsApp or Messenger will look like classic phone calls.
But Apple devoted most of its time to changes in iMessage, i.e. the Messages application, because it decided to implement many functions that users liked in competing applications such as Messenger or Snapchat. Finally, we get a preview of the attached link or even easier sharing of photos, but the biggest topic was emoji and other animations of conversations, such as jumping bubbles, hidden images and the like. What users already know from Messenger, for example, will now be possible to use in iMessage as well.
iOS 10 is coming to iPhones and iPads in the fall, but developers are already downloading the first test version, and Apple should launch a public beta program again in July. iOS 10 can only be run on iPhone 5 and iPad 2 or iPad mini.
I am subjectively happy, after a long time Apple is focusing again on things that burn me. I'm looking forward to autumn. Hopefully we will also see Czech Siri one day. ?
Subjective joy - I guess I'd call it the same, but still I'm really amazed how Apple epically and to the applause of a full hall presents the implementation of something that I take for granted with X years old apps and google and others..
..like how the possibility of a floating video window with the function "always on top" caused an uncontrollable ovation from the whole hall - I appreciate the ability to start YouTube and then watch it in a floating window while doing other work, but is it really news worthy of applause and shouting?
So it's something that no one else has on the market. Even a crippled monkey can keep a wolf in front (that is, your comparison, that the competition has been doing it for a long time), and these applications already made it possible on the Mac. But to prove the system, for example, cut a video from YouTube and let it run independently in the foreground, it's not so easy anymore
That's right, it's about system development, the geek did it a long time ago.
But the fact that you, as a geek, do it without a guarantee for others (doesn't work? Well, it's a free third-party app), for yourself, built on the current system in a certain mood - that's one thing. But making it into a system, keeping a guarantee of functionality for hundreds of millions of people and devices, not damaging other parts, and preparing it for 7-year-old computers - that's just not a month's work. :)
Yes, I fully agree with you?
Personally, I didn't quite understand it... Will he really be able to reply to messages from the lock screen??
It's still possible today, there's no need to unlock the iPhone for an answer.
The only downside for me is that you can't use SwiftKey at that moment, but an unusable iOS keyboard for me.
When I want to reply to a message from the lock screen in ios9, I have to authenticate myself with a fingerprint...
If you want to do Message iPhone you need to unlock but if you want to quickly reply to Message then no need. You just have to turn on notifications and display messages on the locked screen.
Disappointment.
Apple confirmed the trend :-(
all nonsense - the drive is missing :(
unfortunately, stupidity is increasing, which will only be harmful.
Now all that remains is to wait until December, until iOS 10.2 is released, so that it is not full of nasty bugs again
I think that a lot of disappointed critics are wrong here.. Apple is very well aware that iOS 8+9 were worth "balls", the stock is falling, some shareholders have left and the market share is rather on a downward trend.
I have been testing iOS 10 since developer beta 1, and after extensive experience with iOS 8+9, I consider the "ten" to be the most successful. Even though it's only beta 2 today, I'm very pleasantly surprised by the speed, reliability and overall functionality - which does have minor bugs, but it's not even close to the above-mentioned messed up versions 8+9..
By the way, there are no stupid things being added, but useful functions - when you get out of the car at the mall and the iPhone automatically knows with high accuracy where you parked, etc. Stupidity for some, but a big help for me that I no longer have to run around the parking lot like a car radio thief. ;-)
