With the arrival of iOS 11 users saw not only pleasant changes, in the form of a new user interface, new and extended functions and support for new dev kits (for example ARKit), but there were also several inconveniences. If you use 3D Touch, you probably knew about a special gesture that made it easy to flip between apps in the background. It was enough to swipe from the left edge of the screen and a background list of running applications appeared on the display. However, this gesture from iOS 11 disappeared, disillusioning Apple with many users who used it on a daily basis. However, Craig Federighi confirmed that this is only a temporary solution.

The absence of this gesture apparently annoyed one user so much that he decided to contact Craig to ask if it is possible to return this gesture to iOS 11 at least in an optional form. I.e. that it will not be forced on everyone, but those who want to use it will be able to activate it in the settings.

The questioner got a surprising answer, and it most likely pleased him. The 3D Touch gesture for App Switcher should return to iOS. It is not yet clear when this will be, but it is planned for one of the upcoming updates. The developers at Apple had to remove this gesture due to some unspecified technical issue. According to Federighi, however, this is only a temporary solution.

Unfortunately, we had to temporarily remove support for the 11D Touch App Switcher gesture from iOS 3, due to a certain technical limitation. We will definitely bring this feature back in one of the upcoming iOS 11.x updates.

Thanks (and sorry for the inconvenience)

Craig

If you used the gesture and now miss it, you will see its return. If you have a phone with 3D Touch support, but are not familiar with this gesture, check out the video below, which clearly demonstrates its functionality. This was a very convenient way to switch applications without the user having to do the classic double-click on the Home Button.
