Yesterday, Corning, the manufacturer of Gorilla Glass, presented a new generation of its tempered glass called Gorilla Glass 4. Compared to the previous generations, which can be found on the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, for example, it should have better scratch resistance, as it does every year. This year, however, Corning focused on a completely different problem. A very common damage to the display, in addition to scratches, is mainly its breakage as a result of a fall. By carefully studying why and how glass breaks, Corning was able to come up with a material that is twice as shatter-resistant as any other solution on the market, including Gorilla Glass 3.
Corning researchers examined hundreds of broken devices and found that damage caused by sharp contact accounted for more than seventy percent of failures in the field. Researchers have developed a new phone drop test method that simulates real-world glass shattering events, based on thousands of hours of analysis of cover glass that shatters in the field or in the lab.
Corning simulated dropping the phone on a hard surface using sandpaper, on which the device was dropped from a height of one meter. According to the results, the fourth generation Gorilla Glass withstood 80 percent of all falls, i.e. without breaking the glass or creating cobwebs. It is still not completely unbreakable glass, but it is a significant leap in terms of material, which may save our phone, or at least an expensive replacement of the display.
The company calculates that the first phones with Gorilla Glass 4 should appear already this quarter, and we will probably see it in the next generation of iPhones, Apple has been using Gorilla Glass since the first generation of phones. In the past, there were reports that Apple could replace the tempered glass with sapphire, however, due to crash of GT Advanced this will certainly not happen in the near future.
Corning still wants to improve drop resistance, after all, there are still 20% of cases where even the fourth generation of Gorilla Glass will break, and the readability of the display in the sun is still an area where significant innovation can occur. For now, this is the music of the future, but for now we won't have to worry so much about possible falls, which is exactly what ordinary users expect from a modern display - more resistance for rougher handling.

I don't see, but has anyone from the manufacturers thought of gluing the gorilla glass with some kind of foil ala screenshield to sandwiches? (kind of like the windshield of a car, although I know it's a stupid comparison) In my opinion, the already scratch-resistant glass would get the necessary elastic component and would be diametrically completely different against falls. the foil would be inside and everyone would be happy.
The flexible component is the glue between the glass and the digitizer. the glass on the iPhone is not glass itself, but is already glued from several layers. that's why the web is made and won't break.
AT THEM PEE ON THE GLASS AND DO SOMETHING WITH THE BATTERY. I CHARGE THE IP5 TWICE A DAY AND I REALLY DON'T MEET IT
They already did. iPhone 6 plus lasts 2 days.
I understand, it's so ugly that you leave it on the table at home. Otherwise, I've been using iPhones since the first model and none have lasted more than 13 hours if you use it actively... My colleague has a 6 and he also charges it every day... I see the battery as the biggest weakness, and since the 6 model also the design..:)
Ugly? I don't know, but I think it's the most beautiful iPhone ever made. And no, I'm not leaving it on the table. The battery life is better than the Note3 I had before it.
Above all, don't forget that manufacturers are quite comfortable with your glass cracking. Especially APPLE - just look at their warranty and post-warranty repair system and their pricing and you'll have a spoiled weekend :-).
so look how much it costs to touch the LCD, you need a Nokia or Zetka from Sony.. you mustn't go to a mobile emergency room where you can make a profit of 5 for a repair =D
I have Glass stuck on my display and I'm satisfied. I've had it for 9 months and I can't praise myself for even a scratch. Until then, I had a film and it was useless, glass is better and you don't even feel like you have something stuck on your display. They should better focus on battery life than I'm bullshitting
Let the next generation do something with that peeping "lens". It would be nice if they managed to solve it somehow. Otherwise, I'm getting used to the rounded edges, just the Helvetic cross on the back...
