The phrase that was a specialty of Steve Jobs was heard for the first time from someone else's mouth during the keynote. And Tim Cook had every right to do so. A revolutionary product can come along once every few years. Speculations uniformly referred to the watch as iWatch, however, Apple chose a different, even simpler name – Watch. The full name is Apple Watch, or Watch. In 2015, when they will go on sale, Apple will begin writing a new era for its devices.

Design

The official press release states that it is the most personal device ever, which is of course true. It doesn't get any closer than our wrists. The Watch will come in two sizes, the larger of which will measure 42 mm in height, the smaller will be 38 mm. What's more, the watch will be produced in three editions:

  • Watch – sapphire glass, stainless steel
  • Watch Sport – ion reinforced glass, anodized aluminum
  • Watch Edition – sapphire crystal, 18K gold body

Each edition will be available in two color variants, so almost everyone could find their own – Stainless Steel and Space Black Stainless Steel for the Watch, Silver Aluminum and Space Gray Aluminum for the Watch Sport, and Yellow Gold and Rose Gold for the Watch Edition . Add to that six types of straps in different color designs, and it immediately becomes clear that the Watch will be highly personalizable. There is nothing to be surprised about, because watches are not only a time indicator but also a fashion accessory.

Hardware

Apple (quite logically) didn't mention battery life, but did mention how the Watch charges. This is nothing more than what we would not know from MacBooks. So MagSafe has also made its way to watches, but in a slightly different form. While on MacBooks power is used through the connector, on the Watch it was necessary to come up with a different solution, since they do not have any connector. This is nothing more than inductive charging, which is not a technological innovation, but we are seeing it for the first time at Apple.

In addition to MagSafe, there are other electronics on the back of the Watch. Under the sapphire crystal, there are LEDs and photodiodes that can measure heart rate. An accelerometer is then hidden inside the watch, which collects all the data about your movement. GPS and Wi-Fi in the iPhone need to be used for accurate location determination. All the electronics are stored in a single chip called S1. And we're still not done with what could fit into the Watch.

Also worth mentioning is the Taptic Engine, which is a drive device inside the watch that creates haptic feedback. It is therefore not a vibration motor as we know it from, for example, iPhones. The Taptic Engine does not create vibrations, but rather taps your wrist (from the English tap - tap). Each notification can be accompanied by a different sound or a different tap.

Control

The hardware still lacks a display, more precisely a Retina display. As expected, it is logically a small touchpad. Unlike Apple's other touch devices, the Watch's display is able to distinguish between gentle taps and continuous pressure. Thanks to this fact, other gestures can be distinguished and thus offer the user other actions or contextual offers.

We are slowly starting to get to the software. However, in order to operate the software, we need an input device. First, Apple showed us how to work with a mouse on a Mac. He later taught us how to control the music on the iPod using the Click Wheel. In 2007, Apple revolutionized the mobile phone market when it introduced the iPhone with its multi-touch display. And now, in 2014, at the launch of the Watch, he showed the Digital Crown - a classic watch wheel transformed for the needs of the 21st century.

The user interface of the Watch is controlled simultaneously using the display and the Digital Crown. The display is suitable for gestures, as we are used to from iOS. The Digital Crown is useful for selecting from a menu of options or zooming in/out on icons in the main menu. Of course, the control is difficult to describe only from observations from Apple Watch samples, but as a basic description and idea, this is enough. Finally, the Digital Crown can be pressed, which simulates pressing the home button as we know it in iOS.

Time and date

And what can the Watch do? First, quite unexpectedly, display the time and date. You will be able to choose from a whole constellation of "dials" that you can customize - add weather forecast, stopwatch, sunrise/sunset, upcoming calendar event, moon phase, etc. According to Apple, there will be over two million of these combinations. These are possibilities that are practically impossible on classic watches, even digital ones.

Communication

What kind of smart watch would it be if you couldn't use it to make phone calls. Of course, Watch can do this. It can also reply to a text message or iMessage. However, don't look for the Pidi keyboard on the watch display. The Watch will automatically offer several reply options that it creates based on the text of the incoming message. The second way is to dictate the message and send it as text or as an audio recording. With the lack of support for Czech in Siri, we can probably forget about this, but maybe by 2015 the facts will change.

Apple also introduced four more methods of communication that will be able to take place between the Watch. The first of these is Digital Touch, which is drawing on the display. Individual strokes are complemented by slight animations, and thus create a graceful impression. The second way is the good old Walkie-Talkie. In this case, there is no need to start a classic phone call at all, and two people with the Watch can communicate using only their wrists. The third is a tap, which just reminds someone of you. The last and fourth is the heartbeat - the Watch uses a sensor to record your heartbeat and send it.

Fitness

Watch will offer built-in Activity apps. It will be divided into three main sections formed by circles – Move (Movement) to measure calories burned, Exercise (Exercise) to measure minutes spent sitting and Stand (Quiet) to measure how often we got up from sitting and went to stretch. The goal is to sit less, burn as many calories as possible, and do at least some exercise every day and thus complete each of the three circles every day.

In the Activity application, you will be able to choose from types of activities (walking, running, cycling, etc.). You can set a goal and a reminder for each activity so you don't forget it. For each accomplished goal, the application rewards you with success, thus motivating you to overcome increasingly challenging goals. Of course, everything depends on the will and willingness of each person. However, for many people, this approach could help them get motivated to start doing something and beat their results.

Payments

One of the innovations at the keynote was a new payment system Apple Pay. The Passbook app on the Watch can store tickets, airline tickets, tickets, loyalty cards as well as payment cards. To pay with the Watch, simply press the button under the Digital Crown twice and hold it to the payment terminal. This is exactly how simple payments will be in the future if you own a Watch. As with iPhones, security verification using Touch ID will not work here, but Apple has come up with a different idea for the watch - payment will not be made if the iWatch "sticks" off your skin or loses contact with your wrist. This prevents potential thieves from easily paying with a stolen Apple Watch.

Application

In the newly purchased Watch, you will find classic applications such as Calendar, Weather, Music, Maps, Alarm Clock, Stopwatch, Minute Minder, Pictures. Developers will be interested in the Glances functions for displaying news of all kinds (including third-party applications), Notifications for displaying notifications from your selected applications, and last but not least, WatchKit for creating third-party applications.

iOS apps will work perfectly transparently with those on the Watch. For example, if you leave an unread e-mail on your iPhone, this e-mail will also be added to your watch. How far this integration will extend into third-party apps is yet to be seen. However, there are no limits to imagination, and clever developers will surely find ways to use the new device to its fullest.

We won't see this year yet

As already mentioned, the Watch will go on sale in early 2015, which is at least another three months, but more likely. The price will start at 349 dollars, but Apple did not tell us more. Now all we have to do is wait and see how the Watch will actually work. There's no need to draw any conclusions yet, as we haven't seen the Watch live and won't for another month. However, one thing is certain – a new era of smart watches is beginning.
