The eloquent young American, who demonstratively bends the new iPhone 6 Plus in the video, has become an Internet phenomenon in recent days. According to some, the alleged weakness of the apple phone is so serious that several YouTube creators and journalists tried to confirm or refute it. To the authors of the American server Consumer Reports however, all of these attempts came across as too unscientific, and therefore the task they drove alone.
Consumer Reports used the so-called three-point bend test for its experiment. The first two points represent the ends of the phone, which are placed on a flat surface, and the third point is the middle of the device, which is loaded with gradually increasing force. For this, the testers used an Instron precision compression pressure testing machine.
In addition to the iPhone 6 Plus, its smaller counterpart, the iPhone 6, as well as competitors in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, HTC One M8 and LG G3, also had to go through the unpleasant test. Of the older phones, the iPhone 5 was not missing - for comparison regarding the thickness of the device.
The Consumer Reports website points out that according to footage from test rooms in Cupertino, where Apple allowed several journalists to enter, the Californian firm uses identical equipment in its experiments. Reports from journalists present indicate that in official tests the iPhone 6 Plus undergoes a pressure of 25 kilograms. But the Consumer Reports test went even further and in all phones determined the moment when the phone permanently bends, as well as the force needed to destroy it - the loss of the integrity of the "cover" of the phone.
"All the phones tested proved to be quite durable," says Consumer Reports after testing. The iPhone 6 Plus was said to be even more durable than the smaller iPhone 6, bending as much as 41 kilograms. It was completely destroyed only at a pressure of 50 kilos. In doing so, it surpassed the HTC One, which - as the authors of the test point out - is often referred to as a very robust phone. Other competitors, on the other hand, fared better than the iPhone 6 Plus.
Phones from Samsung and LG did bend during the individual tests, which slowly increased the applied pressure, but they always returned to their original form after the test was over. However, their plastic bodies could not withstand the force of 59 and 68 kilograms, respectively, and cracked under this onslaught. The display of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 also failed.
Here are the test results in numbers:
Deformation | Packaging breakdown | |
HTC One M8 | 32 kg | 41kg |
iPhone 6 | 32 kg | 45 kg |
6 iPhone Plus | 41 kg | 50 kg |
LG G3 | 59 kg | 59 kg |
iPhone 5 | 59 kg | 68 kg |
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 | 68 kg | 68 kg |
You can watch the entire test in the video below. Consumer Reports adds in its report that although it is of course possible to destroy phones with significant force, such deformation should not occur in normal use. And not even with the media-popular iPhone 6 Plus.

Well, finally someone tested it so stupid people don't believe the bullshit.
Let them believe what they want, but they don't listen to me everywhere I look. :D

Think tested by these reliable journalists and experts, what is popular in the group? :D
Then I don't understand how they can bend it by hand...
Goophone i6.
Those tests are stupid, because I bend them in the middle and then it is firm. If they bent the iPhone 6 plus so that they pressed right under the volume down button, it wouldn't last that long. That's what's wrong with the iPhone design. If you look at the bottom pictures, all iPhones bend right there. And from the other side, where the sim card is inserted, they bend in the middle. They should test iPhones at the weakest point, and that seems to be a straight line from the bottom of the volume down button to the bottom part where the sim card is inserted.
Ok, in any case, it is clearly visible on the x videos that the author exerts considerable force (some almost knock) in specific places when bending. I don't carry my phone in the back pocket of my pants, in a bag under my laptop, I don't drop it and I don't even drop it. I usually have it either in the breast pocket of my jacket or on my thigh in my pants. To be honest, I can't imagine that it would deform in any way during a lot of driving, without me treating the machine like a pig or doing stupid things with it.
There was a review on Wired, where he confirms that after a few days of normal use, his phone bent, so that when he puts it on a table with glass, it has a propeller instead of a straight phone, so there will really be something to it: http://www.wired.com/2014/09/iphone-6-plus-review/
I have to agree.
If you notice the IP5 construction, there are three holes in the body on the left side (two for volume and one for silent). On the right side is a narrow SIM slot.
On the IP6, there is one fairly large longitudinal hole for the volume buttons and another hole for the silent on the left side. On the right side there is again a large longitudinal hole for the moved Wakeup button. So I don't need to be an atomic physicist to understand that IP6 is quite weakened in the upper part (left and right part) and it is possible to bend it. The IP5 didn't have such a longitudinal opening on either side, and it wasn't that thin either.
So you're right mate - it's exactly as your foreword says - weakened on both sides + rounded edges + an overall weaker profile than the iP 5 = it will last round!!! IP 5 normally bends a little, but it bends - by carrying it in your back pocket! These new ones will bend even when worn on the thigh = I'll bet on that! I enjoy APPLE's crap about titanium braces the most...
And how the display peels off is also a massacre = Ive should return the diploma - if it is really his work! It's a shame to talk about the price for this shit...
I guess we didn't understand each other. I am writing about the same thing. IP6 is weakened in the upper part on both sides. IP5 is certainly stronger in these places.
I don't know, but here it looks like they bend like paper https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJ3Ds6uf0Yg
Well, I don't know, the same people are still bending it or rather making money from it. In addition, how is it that the display came off so easily now, and before that, it always really stuck there? In addition, how he demonstratively does not bend another, I find it ridiculous.
Sponsor of the prank - desperate Samsung
who knows if it's an iPhone, in his first video he bends it with a completely different force at a completely different time.. here it looks like rubber..
The classic bubble blew up. Samsung is heavily defensive, so it looks for mistakes wherever it can, especially their appalling quality 2. Quality as if our media is not interested at all.
nothing broke, the result is that when you buy a six you will destroy it with a load of 32 kg, which means it will last half and a little more than version 5. it will flatten your smile and you will find out that the phone will go to waste
Drive would be something to think about. Today we already know how it is with these professional journalists and testers. So only their PR goes full speed ahead and massages and massages how to straighten it out at least a little. :-)
The worst are the aggressive Samsungs who can't get over their advertised Note, the complaint lasted almost half a year, it has quality new competition.
I would evaluate it like this, to be honest, Apple could have reflected on people's needs and stayed with the rough iPhone 5 and rather increased the battery capacity, I would also applaud for that, at the same time it would have avoided the mentioned problems, added wireless charging and at least resistance to dust and water.. who has not had the mess from the solutions get into the connector for charging? In IOS 8, I was also waiting for things like, the possibility to choose the most used icons first, automatic sorting, the possibility to choose the preferred wifi at work, etc.. in short, think a little bit about people as well as ego.
about that automatic shift. I don't know about you, but I would be seriously annoyed if my icons lined up by themselves. I'm used to the location of application icons and when I launch them, I go by memory and not to look for it, if it happened to be in the top launches
I don't have such a problem. I have a CAT B15 and this is definitely not a threat to him :D
Am I the only one who noticed this, or did no one really talk about phones that were special so that nothing would happen to them and they wouldn't get destroyed, they were waterproof, but about mainstream smartphones?
