Yesterday, Apple in its press statement announced that Mac VP of Software Engineering Craig Federighi and VP of Hardware Engineering Dan Riccio have been named to senior roles. Both will now hold the position of Senior Vice President and will report directly to Tim Cook. We could already see Craig Federighi at this year's WWDC, where he presented users with the latest version of OS X - Mountain Lion.

As senior vice president of software engineering for Mac, Fedighi will continue to be responsible for Mac OS X development and operating system engineering teams. Federighi worked at NeXT, then joined Apple, and then spent a decade at Ariba, where he held several positions including vice president of Internet Services and chief technology officer. He returned to Apple in 2009 to lead the development of Mac OS X. Federighi holds an engineering degree in computer science and a bachelor's degree in electronic engineering and computer science from the University of California, Berkeley.

As senior vice president of hardware engineering, Riccio will lead the Mac, iPhone and iPod engineering teams. It has been an integral part of all iPad products since the first generation of the device. Riccio joined Apple in 1998 as vice president of product design and was instrumental in most of Apple's hardware during his career. Dan received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1986.

The press release also states that Bob Mansfield remains at Apple, albeit two months ago announced his retirement. According to the information released, he will continue to be involved in future products and will report directly to Tim Cook. Mansfield by Apple website it remains in its current position, which creates an unusual situation. Apple currently has two senior vice presidents of hardware engineering. Bob Mansfield brought to the world several iconic products, such as iMac or MacBook Air, and it is only good for Apple that this bachelor of engineering from the University of Austin decided to stay with the company.
