The popularity of the Mac App Store is growing. New apps are constantly being added and developers often celebrate huge successes. Earnings are made despite the fact that Apple takes a full thirty percent of the total earnings. Apple itself is also focusing more and more on its application store. It is expected to put all of its software on the Mac App Store soon.

It's obvious that optical media is already passé for the Californian company. After all, the new MacBook Airs don't even have a DVD drive anymore, with the Mac App Store, no discs are needed anymore, and the only question mark so far is how the new Mac OS X Lion will be sold. It's quite likely that we won't see it on DVD anymore. And since Apple has a very restrained approach to Blu-ray, the path will simply not lead here.

Therefore, there is talk that they will want to get rid of all boxed versions of their software in Cupertino and gradually start distributing it exclusively through the Mac App Store. This is also supported by the fact that it is less expensive and Apple would increase its profits. This move is also indicated by services in Apple Retail Stores, where when you buy a new computer, they will help you set up an email account, guide you through the Mac App Store, set up an iTunes account and possibly show you other basics of operating the system and selected programs.

In addition, Snow Leopard is only delivered on flash drives because of the MacBook Air. Apple has thus shown that it is possible. The question remains when the relatively radical step Steve Jobs et al. determined. However, it could come sooner than we expect.
