For several months now, there has been talk not of if at all, but rather when the new Apple TV will be introduced. The last time Apple showed a new version of its set-top box was in 2012, so the current third generation is already significantly superior. But when the fourth arrives, we can expect pleasant news.

Originally, Apple was supposed to introduce the new Apple TV in June, but then it postponed its plans and the current ones are supposed to set the date for the introduction of the new set-top box in September, when the Californian company is about to release also new iPhones and other products.

Mark Gurman of 9to5Mac (along with some others) has been reporting on the upcoming Apple TV for several months now, and now – perhaps less than a month before its launch – brought a complete list of news that we can look forward to.

We will probably not only observe changes inside the body, but the exterior of the Apple TV is also to undergo a redesign. After five years, the new Apple TV will be thinner and slightly wider, with the fact that due to the necessary connectivity of wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, most of the chassis will be made of plastic. However, the new controller will probably be much more fundamental in terms of functionality.

The previous controller had only a few hardware buttons and the control of some elements was not ideal. The new controller should have a larger control surface, a touch interface, gesture support, and maybe even Force Touch. At the same time, audio is supposed to be integrated into the controller, which could mean three things: a small speaker could enhance the experience of using Apple TV; headphones could be connected via the audio jack so you don't disturb others in the room; available audio could mean a microphone and associated Siri support.

Siri support seems to be the biggest favorite. The big change in the fourth generation Apple TV will be that it will be the first model to run completely on the iOS core, namely iOS 9, which should mean, among other things, the arrival of Siri in the Apple set-top box.

Controlling the Apple TV was now only possible via the small controller mentioned above or the iOS app. Thanks to Siri, it could be much easier, for example, to search across the entire Apple TV and start your favorite shows or music. Finally, Apple is also set to release complete developer tools, which, together with the opening of support for third-party applications, should be a major innovation in Apple TV. Developers will be able to develop applications for Apple TV as well as for iPhones and iPads, which will take the use of the miniature box in living rooms to the next level.

In connection with the new and more demanding software, significantly more powerful and "bigger" internals are also expected to arrive in Apple TV. The dual-core A8 processor will be a major shift against the current single-core A5 chip, and an increase in storage (so far 8GB) and RAM (so far 512MB) is also expected. Starting with iOS 9, Apple TV should also adopt a user interface that will be similar to that of iPhones and iPads. In the end, the only question mark hangs over the alternative to cable television (relevant at least initially, especially for the United States), which Apple is said to have been preparing for a long time, but apparently won't have it ready even in September.
