On Monday, Apple introduced iOS 8 and along with it a number of big news. However, several functions were omitted from the presentation, and we have selected ten of the most interesting ones for you. Improvements have been made to the camera, the Safari browser, but also to Settings or Calendar.

Camera

Although photography has been a big part of Apple's presentations in the past - especially when it came to the new iPhone - it didn't get much space yesterday. And the Camera application has received a number of significant improvements.

Time-lapse mode

iOS 7 brought a new, easier way to switch between camera modes using a switch at the bottom of the screen. The reason for this was their growing number – classic and square photo, panorama, video. With iOS 8, one more mode will be added – time-lapse video. All you have to do is aim the phone correctly, hold down the shutter button, and the app will automatically take a photo after a certain interval. There will be no need to manually set the shooting speed or edit the video additionally.

Self-timer

Another novelty within the Camera is a very simple function, but unfortunately omitted in previous versions. It is a simple self-timer that, after a set interval, automatically takes a picture of a joint portrait, for example. In such situations, it was still necessary to use special applications from the App Store.

Independent focus and exposure

Apple said at WWDC that with iOS 8, it will give developers access to camera features such as focus or exposure settings. However, these aspects have not yet been possible to edit independently even in the built-in Camera application. iOS 8 changes this and allows users to better compose a shot. It is not yet clear how Apple will handle this function - whether it will be a double tap or perhaps separate controls on the edge of the application.

Improvements on older models and iPad

iOS 8 will not only bring new features to the latest iPhones and iPads, but also older models. These will be functions introduced in iOS 7, which were denied to previous versions of the phone and tablet. Specifically, it is sequential shooting (burst mode), which on the iPhone 5s reaches a speed of 10 frames per second, but is significantly slower on older models. The upcoming version of iOS will remove this shortcoming. iPad users can also look forward to wider photographic options, as they will now be able to take panoramic pictures similar to the iPhone. It's just that they'll probably look a little weird.

Safari

The Apple browser underwent the biggest changes on Mac, but we can also find some interesting changes on iOS.

Private bookmarks

Today, if you need to switch the browser to private mode, when the device will not remember what you did on the Internet, you must do so within the entire browser with all bookmarks. iOS 8 has learned from the competition and will offer the option to open individual private bookmarks. You can leave the others open and nothing will happen to them.

DuckDuckGo Search

Privacy also plays a role in Safari's second improvement. In addition to Google, Yahoo and Bing, its new version will also offer a fourth option, a search engine not very well known in our country DuckDuckGo. Its advantage is the fact that it does not keep any records of its users, which some users find annoying with classic search engines.

Settings

Although we did not see the change of the much-criticized icon for Settings, we did see several useful innovations within this application.

Battery usage by apps

With the increasing number of applications, using a smartphone turns into a battle with time and battery life. Although there are a number of instructions on how to keep your device alive longer, until today we did not have the option of monitoring the energy consumption of individual applications. This changes in iOS 8, and through the Settings application it is possible to monitor the difficulty of individual applications. Similar to iOS 7, it brought us an overview of applications according to their use of the mobile Internet.

22 new languages for dictation

During his presentation, Craig Federighi mentioned improvements to Siri and twenty-two new dictation languages. However, he did not mention more details and it was not so clear how exactly it will be in iOS 8. Today we already know that these are not new languages for communicating with Siri, but we still have reason to be happy. We don't just have to click all the data into our favorite applications anymore, because we will be able to use the dictation option. And that in Czech and Slovak.

Notes, calendar

Although Apple has come a long way with these apps in iOS 7, they are still far from perfect.

Smart notifications for meetings

The calendar in OS X Mavericks introduced a useful function that can calculate how long it will take to get to an upcoming meeting by car or on foot. Accordingly, it will automatically adjust the advance with which it will let the user know that it is necessary to leave. This feature is now also available on iOS 8, unfortunately still without public transport support.

Text formatting in Notes

Before the WWDC conference, there was originally speculation about the arrival of TextEdit on iOS, but the reality is a bit simpler. Text formatting is coming to mobile phones and tablets from Apple, but not as part of the new editor. Instead, we find options B, I a U within the Notes.
