Accessibility features make it easier for users with a variety of disabilities to use smart devices. Not so long ago, these functions were not so much a self-evident part of smartphones, tablets and computers, but fortunately, they are gradually expanding and are not just a prerogative of Apple products. The iPhone's default display settings may not necessarily suit all users. For some, the font may be too small, for others too thin, for some, the default color settings of the display may not suit. Fortunately, Apple thinks of all users, including their needs and possible handicaps, and offers a wide range of display customization options in the settings. In today's article, we will look at these options in a little more detail.

Color inversion

Some users are more comfortable with text displayed on a dark background, but dark mode as such is not 100% satisfactory. In that case, head to Settings -> Accessibility -> Display and text size. For simple smart inversion, switch the button next to “Smart Inversion” to the “on” position. The colors on your display will be inverted in this case, with the exception of media and selected applications with a dark theme. To invert all colors on the display, activate the "Classic inversion" button.

Work with colors, filters and other settings

If you have problems with color perception, your iPhone offers a number of options that you can use to make it more pleasant and easier to use. You can see part of these settings right away on the main page Settings -> Accessibility -> Display and text size. These are the following points:

  • Reduce transparency – by activating this setting, you reduce the translucency and blurring of the elements on the display so that the content is easier to read for you
  • Higher contrast – activate this element to increase the color contrast between the background and the foreground of the application
  • Distinguish without color – if you have difficulty perceiving different colors, activating this setting will replace selected elements of your iPhone's user interface with alternative elements for better recognition

Color filters

The ability to turn on color filters is also great for better and easier color differentiation on your iPhone's display. You can play with color filters in Settings -> Accessibility -> Display and text size -> Color filters. At the top of the screen you will find a panel with three different types of filter display. Swipe left or right on the screen to select the filter view that suits you best and where you can see examples of changes as clearly as possible. Then activate the “Color Filters” item under this panel. After activation, you can notice a total of five color filter setting options on the screen depending on the specific color vision disorder (red/green filter for protanopia, green/red filter for deuteranopia, blue/yellow filter for tritanopia, as well as color toning and grayscale). After setting a suitable filter, you can adjust its intensity on the slider below the list of filters, you can adjust the shade at the bottom of the screen.

Restriction of movement

If you are bothered by the effects of movements on the screen of your iPhone (the illusion of wallpaper or application icons tilting, animations and effects in various applications, zoom effects, transitions and other similar phenomena), you can activate the function called "Limit movement". In this section, you can customize individual elements of this setting in more detail – prioritize the blending effect, turn on or off the playback of message effects, or activate or deactivate the option to play video previews.

Additional display customization

If you have problems with text perception by default on your iPhone, you can activate the following alternatives in Settings -> Accessibility -> Display and text size:

  • Bold text to display bold text in the user interface
  • Larger text (with the option to set a specific text size)

You also have the option of the following settings on your iPhone:

  • The shape of the buttons to add shape to certain buttons
  • Reduce transparency to improve contrast
  • Higher contrast to increase the contrast between the foreground and background of applications
  • Reduce white point to reduce the intensity of light colors

Enlarge the content of the display

For some, it may be problematic to comfortably perceive some of the smaller elements on the iPhone display. If you have problems with this issue, go to Settings -> Accessibility -> Zoom. Here you can activate the item "Zoom" and thus activate the option to zoom the whole screen by double-tapping with three fingers, to move by dragging with three fingers, and to change the magnification by double-tapping and dragging with three fingers. By activating the item "Track focus", you can start tracking the selected items, the cursor and the text you write. Activating smart typing mode will automatically enlarge the window when the keyboard is activated. You can also set a zoom filter or maximum zoom level here.
