Apple thinks about users with all kinds of disabilities or limitations in the Accessibility feature for its devices. The company also adapts the functions of its products to those with, for example, hearing problems. In today's installment of our Accessibility series, we'll be looking at features that are related to sound and hearing.

Live listening function with AirPods or PowerBeats Pro headphones

One useful feature on select iPhones, iPads, and iPod touches is a feature called Live Listen, which essentially turns your iOS device into a microphone, allowing you to better hear a conversation in a noisy room, for example. Live listening can be used on iOS devices with the operating system iOS 12 and later in combination with AirPods or Powerbeats Pro headphones. To enable the feature, first visit Settings -> Control Center -> Edit Controls to add a Live Listen shortcut (the hearing icon) to the Control Center controls. For Live Listening, all you have to do is have the headphones paired with your iOS device, activate the Control Center and tap the appropriate icon.

Visual warning

Some of us may not hear sound notifications or incoming call ringing. Sometimes it can be difficult to notice the relevant display changes. For these purposes, Apple introduced the possibility of LED flash notifications on the iPhone or iPad Pro as part of the Accessibility function. You will be notified of an incoming message or call with an LED flash even when your device is locked and muted. You activate LED flash alerts in Settings -> Accessibility -> Audiovisual aids, where you turn on the “LED flash alerts” item and specify whether the flash should be activated even in silent mode.

Hearing aids with Made for iPhone (Mfi) certification

If your hearing aids are Mfi certified (you can find out at this page), you can use them together with your iOS device. After you pair the certified hearing aid with your iOS device, the sound from the device will be transmitted to the hearing aid. In Settings, select Bluetooth and open the battery compartment door on your hearing aid. You pair the hearing aid in Settings -> Accessibility -> Hearing, where you select Hearing aids. Close the battery compartment door on the hearing aid and your device will then search for the hearing aid. In Settings -> Accessibility -> Hearing aids, tap the name of your hearing aid in the "MFi Hearing Aids" section and tap "Pair" when prompted. If you want to control the hearing aid from the lock screen from the Control Center, leave the “On lock screen” option checked.
