If you worked with the Internet in the 1990s, you must have used Internet Explorer from Microsoft, which has been an integral part of the Microsoft Windows operating system for some time. In today's episode, we will remember the day when the US Department of Justice decided to file a lawsuit against Microsoft precisely because of this browser.

The Microsoft lawsuit (1998)

On May 18, 1998, a lawsuit was filed against Microsoft. The Department of Justice of the United States of America, together with the attorneys general of twenty states, filed a lawsuit against Microsoft due to the integration of its Internet Explorer web browser into the Windows 98 operating system. In the end, the lawsuit made a very significant mark in the history of not only technology.

According to the lawsuit, Microsoft practically created a monopoly on its own web browser, abused the dominant position of the Windows operating system in the market and severely disadvantaged providers of competing Internet browsers. The entire antitrust lawsuit ultimately resulted in a settlement between the Justice Department and Microsoft, which was ordered to make its operating system available for other operating systems as well. Internet Explorer became part of the Microsoft Windows operating system (or in the Windows 95 Plus package!) in the summer of 1995.
