When we think of a spreadsheet, most of us currently think of Excel from Microsoft, Numbers from Apple, or perhaps OpenOffice Calc. In the eighties of the last century, however, a program called Lotus 1-2-3 reigned supreme in this field, which we will recall in today's article. Compaq's acquisition of Digital Equipment Corporation will also be discussed.

Lotus 1-2-3 Release (1983)

Lotus Development Corporation released software called Lotus 26-1983-1 on January 2, 3 for IBM computers. This spreadsheet program was largely developed due to the prior existence of VisiCalc software, or rather the fact that VisiCalc's creators did not register the corresponding patent. The Lotus spreadsheet got its name from the three functions it offered – tables, graphs, and basic database functions. Over time, Lotus became the most widely used spreadsheet for IBM computers. IBM acquired Lotus Development Corporation in 1995, the Lotus 1-2-3 program was developed until 2013 as part of the Lotus Smart Suite office suite.

DEC goes under Compaq (1998)

Compaq Computer acquired Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) on January 26, 1998. The price was $9,6 billion and was one of the largest acquisitions in the computer industry at the time. Founded in 1957, Digital Equipment Corporation is considered one of the pioneers of the American computer industry, producing computers for scientific and engineering purposes in the 70s and 80s. In 2002, it also went under the wing of Hewlett-Packard with Compaq Computer.
