The events that we will mention in today's part of our "historical" series do not have much in common with the Czech Republic. Nevertheless, these are interesting and important milestones - we will remind you of the start of operation of the Smith-Putnam wind turbine and the opening of the first ever Blockbuster video rental store.

Smith-Putnam Wind Turbine (1941)

On October 19, 1941, the Smith-Putnam wind turbine first supplied electricity to the Grandpa's Knob area of Castleton, Vermont. This was the first case of its kind. The Smith-Putnam wind turbine was also the first to break the historic one-megawatt mark. The stump turbine operated for 1100 hours before one of their blades failed. The turbine was designed by Palmer Cosslett Putnam, and manufactured by the S. Morgan Smith Company. Until 1979, it was the largest wind turbine ever built.
