In today's installment of our series on historical events, we recall, for example, the first conference on the World Wide Web, which took place in 1994. But we also recall the introduction of the Street View function for Google Maps or the establishment of Towel Day.

Towel Day (2001)

Anyone who has read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams knows the importance of a towel. Towel Day was first held worldwide on May 25, 2001, two weeks after Adams' death. Every year on May 25, supporters of Douglas Adams remember the writer's legacy by wearing a towel in a visible place. Towel Day has its own tradition in our country too, gatherings are held in Brno or Letná in Prague, for example.

First World Wide Web Conference (1994)

On May 25, 1994, the first international conference on the World Wide Web (WWW) was held at CERN. Eight hundred participants expressed interest in participating in the conference, which lasted until May 27, but only half of them were approved. The conference eventually entered the history of technology as the "Woodstock of the Web", and was attended by not only computer specialists, but also businessmen, government employees, scientists and other experts, the aim of the conference was to establish the basic points and rules for the future expansion of the Web to the world.

Google Street View is Coming (2007)

The Google Street View feature is very popular among users. People use it not only for better orientation in destination points, but also, for example, for "traveling with a finger on the map" and virtual discovery of places that they might never be able to look at in person. Google introduced its Street View feature on May 25, 2007. Initially, it was only available to users in the United States. In 2008, Google began to test the technology of blurring the faces of people in the footage with the help of a special computer algorithm for this function.
