You'd probably be hard-pressed to find a person these days who doesn't know the iconic Tetris at all. Each of us has certainly tried putting together dice in some form in the past, and some of us still enjoy it from time to time. Tetris was created back in 1984, but it was only four years later that it found its way beyond the big puddle - and that's when its spectacular journey to huge success began.

Tetris Conquers America (1988)

On January 29, 1988, the now legendary Tetris appeared in the United States for the very first time - at that time only as a game for personal computers. The game was released by Spectrum Holobyte, which had the appropriate license to distribute it. It didn't take long for other companies to show interest in licensing Tetris and bring it to other platforms as well. In the end, the winner of the license for Tetris was Nintendo, which launched it on its handheld game console Game Boy, later Tetris spread to a number of other devices, including the iPhone and iPod. The game Tetris was created by Russian software engineer Alexei Pajitnov in 1984, and quickly gained popularity around the world. Of course, it also saw a number of plagiarisms, copies and more or less bizarre versions. As of December 2011, Tetris boasted an incredible 202 million copies sold, of which roughly 70 million were physical units and 132 million were downloads. Tetris is currently available on more than sixty-five different platforms, and has become a timeless and never-aging classic.
