In today's episode of our series called Back to the Past, we will go back to the end of the eighties of the last century. Let's remember the day when Tandy Corporation decided to start making clones of IBM's then-popular PS/2 product line.

Tandy Corporation Starts Business with IBM Computer Clones (1988)

Tandy held a press conference on April 21, 1988, at which, among other things, it officially announced that it planned to begin manufacturing its own clones of IBM's PS/2 product line. The aforementioned conference was held not long after IBM announced. that it will license patents for key technologies used in its computers. IBM came to this decision after its management realized that it was beginning to practically lose control of the ever-expanding market for IBM-compatible technologies, and that licensing could bring more profit to the company.

Over the course of five years, clones of IBM machines eventually gained even more popularity than the original computers. IBM eventually left the PC market entirely and sold the relevant division to Lenovo in 2005. The aforementioned sale of IBM's computer division took place during the first half of December 2004. In connection with the sale, IBM stated at the time that it planned to focus more on server and infrastructure business in the future. The price of IBM's computer division was 1,25 billion dollars at the time, but only part of it was paid in cash. IBM's server division also came under Lenovo a little later.
