Along with the start of a new week comes another part of our regular "historical" series. Today, in addition to the flight of an airship over the Atlantic or the spread of a worm called Code Red, we will remember one more event that is not directly related to technology, but its importance is not negligible.

First airship flight over the Atlantic (1919)

On July 13, 1919, the British airship R34 completed its first flight over the Atlantic. It was the first vehicle of its type to fly non-stop across the Atlantic from east to west. The R34 airship came from the Beardmore Inchinnan Airship Factory and its construction began as early as 1917.

The Watergate Affair (1973)

On July 13, 1973, a suspected fuse failure was reported anonymously in one part of the Watergate South building - in the opposite part of the building it was extinguished and figures with flashlights were moving around. The security guard discovered locks taped over so that they could not be locked, with the taping occurring repeatedly. The summoned police found five men in the offices of the Democratic Party, whom they subsequently accused of burglary and attempted wiretapping. As part of the investigation, the connection of the perpetrators with the Republican Committee for the Reelection of President Nixon was proven, the whole matter went down in history as the Watergate affair.

Code Red (2001)

On July 13, 2001, a worm named Code Red was released onto the Internet. The malware targeted Microsoft's IIS web servers and spread very efficiently and quickly. A massive expansion occurred six days later, when it attacked a total of 359 computers. It worked on the principle of flooding the buffer with a long string of repeated 'N' characters, which allowed it to run arbitrary code and infect the computer.
