In today's installment of our regular series on historical events in technology, we're heading to the stars—specifically, Vege, which was photographed by scientists at Harvard University on July 17, 1850. But we will also remember the founding of the Nippon Electric Company.

On July 17, 1850, scientists at Harvard University managed to successfully take a photograph of a star for the first time. The author of the photo, which was taken in the university observatory, was astronomer John Adams Whipple. The image was of the star Vega in the constellation Lyra. Vega is the brightest star in this constellation and at the same time the fifth brightest star in the night sky.

Establishment of the Nippon Electric Company (1899)

On July 17, 1899, Iwadare Kunihiko founded Nippon Electric Company Ltd. (NEC). Kunihiko was an expert in telegraph systems, and at one time worked under Thomas Edison himself. Financial support from Nippon Electric Company Ltd. secured Western Electric, creating Japan's first joint-venture with a foreign company.
