Technology is also intrinsically linked to medical science. In today's installment of our regular series on historical events in technology, we remember the first CT brain, but also the first CD players from Sony.

First CT scan of the brain (1971)

On October 1, 1971, the first computed tomography of the brain was performed. Patient number one was a middle-aged lady in whom doctors suspected a frontal lobe tumor. The investigation was carried out at Atkinson Morley's Hospital in south London. Computed tomography (sometimes also computerized tomography, CT or CAT) is a non-invasive examination method that uses X-rays to image internal organs and tissues.

Sony CD Players (1982)

On October 1, 1982, Sony began selling its first CD players to the public in Japan. The CDP-101 player, whose price at the time was roughly 16 crowns, became the first swallow. The player was initially sold only in Japan, because Philips - Sony's partner in the development of the CD format - could not match its pace with the originally agreed date. The two companies finally agreed on two dates - the Philips CD900 player did not see the light of day until November of the same year.
