Litigation is by no means a pleasant thing – but it is something that has been associated with Apple for many years. In our article today, we will recall one such dispute that flared up at the end of the eighties of the last century. At the time, Apple sued Microsoft for infringing copyright in its Windows 2.0 operating system. In addition, we will also commemorate the release day of the PC-DOS version 3.3 operating system.

PC-DOS version 3.3 released (1987)

On March 17, 1987, IBM released its PC-DOS version 3.3 operating system. PC-DOS was an abbreviation for Personal Computer Disk Operating System. This operating system was intended not only for IBM PCs, but also for other compatible machines, and was one of the most popular operating systems until the mid-90s. The first version of the "triple" PC-DOS saw the light of day in the summer of 1984. Its subsequent variants brought a number of novelties, such as support for 1,2MB diskettes and 3,5-inch 720KB diskettes, correction of partial errors and others.

Apple vs. Microsoft (1988)

Apple sued rival Microsoft on March 17, 1988. The subject of this lawsuit was alleged copyright infringement in the Microsoft Windows operating system. Apple management did not like that the MS Windows 2.0 operating system contained many user interface elements from Apple's desktop operating system. The lawsuit dragged on for many more years, but this time Apple came out as the loser. In the course of the investigation, the court came to the conclusion that there was no license violation by Microsoft, because certain elements simply cannot be licensed.
