In today's part of our regular return to the past, we will move in the nineties of the last century. In the first part of our article, we will focus on the company Maxis, which became publicly traded in 1995, and which is responsible for the cult game title SimCity. But it will also be about the beginnings of the controversial Napster service.

Here Comes Napster (1999)

On June 1, 1999, Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker launched their P2P sharing service called Napster. Back then, Napster gave users the ability to quickly and easily upload or download music files in MP3 format. The service became a huge hit with people practically overnight, gaining popularity especially among American college students. Just six months after its launch, in early December 1999, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) decided to file a lawsuit against Napster, or rather its creators, for mass copyright infringement. The lawsuit, along with a number of other allegations, eventually led to Napster shutting down in early September 2002.

Maxis Goes Global (1995)

Maxis became publicly traded on June 1, 1995. If this name tells you something, but you can't remember exactly, know that this is the creator of the popular game series SimCity. In addition to SimCity, other interesting and fun simulators such as SimEarth, SimAnt or SimLife emerged from the workshop of Maxis. All these game titles were inspired by Maxis co-founder Will Wright's own passion for model ships and airplanes, which has been with him since his childhood. Will Wright co-founded Maxis with Jeff Braun.
