Today's installment of the series on important milestones in the field of technology will be devoted to medical science and the discovery of the transistor. In the first case, we go back to the year 2000, when a microprocessor was successfully implanted under the retina. But let's also remember the introduction of the transistor in 1948.

Introducing the Transistor (1948)

On June 30, 1948, Bell Labs introduced its first transistor. The beginnings of this invention date back to December 1947 at Bell Laboratories, and behind it was a team consisting of William Shockley, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain - all of whose members received the Nobel Prize in Physics a few years later.

Microchip placement under the retina (2000)

On June 30, 2000, Dr. Alan Chow and his brother Vincent announced that they had successfully implanted a silicon microchip under the human retina. The mentioned chip was smaller than the head of a pin and its "thickness" was in the order of microns, i.e. hundredths of a millimeter. These chips also include solar cells that take care of the energy supply. The technology involved has advanced since then, and scientists around the world are working hard to make it as useful, beneficial, and comfortable for the wearer as possible. Microchips are primarily intended to replace a diseased or damaged retina.
