In our "historical" series, we don't deal with movies very often, but today we will make an exception - we will remember the premiere of the romantic comedy Love on the Internet from 1998. In addition to this film, we will also talk about the first publication of the Perl scripting language.

Here Comes Perl (1987)

Larry Wall released the Perl programming language on December 18, 1987. Perl borrows some of its features from other programming languages, including C, sh, AWK, and sed. Although its name is not officially an acronym, it is often said that the individual letters could stand for "Practical Extraction and Reporting Language". Perl received a major expansion in 1991 with the arrival of version 4, and in 1998 PC Magazin included it among the finalists of the Technical Excellence Award in the Development Tool category.

The Internet in Film (1998)

On December 18, 1998, the Hollywood film You've Got Mail with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks premiered. In addition to the mutual relationship between the two main protagonists, the film revolved around the Internet and mobile technologies, unusually for its time - the two main characters met on the Internet, exchanged emails and chatted through the then popular AOL (America OnLine) service. The character played by Tom Hanks in the film used an IBM computer, the small bookstore saleswoman played by Meg Ryan owned an Apple Powerbook.
