3D printing has been an integral part of technology for some time now. Today marks six years since a 3D printer was successfully installed and operational aboard the International Space Station. In addition, in today's installment of our "historical" series, we commemorate the birth of Norbert Wiener.

Norbert Wiener was born (1894)

Norbert Wiener was born on November 26, 1894. Norbert Wiener was an American mathematician and philosopher, and is still considered the founder of cybernetics. Wiener used the term "cybernetics" in his work Cybernetics or Control and Communication in Organisms and Machines. Norbert Wiener was born in Columbia, Missouri, and was considered a child prodigy from an early age. He could read at the age of four, graduating from Ayer High School in 1906. At the age of eleven, he began studying mathematics at Tufts College, three years later he received a bachelor's degree. Among other things, Wiener studied zoology at Harvard University, philosophy at Connell University, and became a doctor of philosophy at the age of eighteen. In 1919 Wiener began teaching mathematics at MIT, in 1933 he won the prestigious Bôcher Memorial Prize.

3D printer on the International Space Station (2014)

On November 26, 2014, the crew of the International Space Station officially announced that they had successfully installed and operationalized a 3D printer. The 3D printer in the premises of the International Space Station is intended to help reduce costs, as it is possible to print selected components. Transporting material to the International Space Station can sometimes be complicated and costly, and some components are too large to transport.
