In today's part of our series on important events in the field of technology, we will return to the years 1920 and 1989. We will remember the birth of the creator of the APL programming language Kenneth E. Iverson and the premiere of the first ever episode of the now cult series The Simpsons.

Kenneth E. Iverson was born (1920)

On December 17, 1920, Kenneth E. Iverson was born in Canada. Iverson studied mathematics at Queen's University in Ontario, and later earned degrees in applied mathematics at Harvard, where he also taught. Together with Adin D. Falkoff, Kenneth E. Iverson developed the programming language APL (A Programming Language) in 1962. Iverson devoted the following decades of his life to computer science, in 1979 he received the Turing Award for his contribution to the theory of programming languages, mathematical notation and the development of the APL language. In 1982, Iverson received the IEEE Computer Pioneer Award, and in 1991, the National Medal for Contribution to Technology.

The Simpsons First Episode (1989)

On December 17, 1989, the first ever episode of the now cult animated series The Simpsons was broadcast on FOX TV. The satirical cartoon sitcom, which liked to poke fun at the everyday lives of ordinary Americans, quickly gained great popularity among adults, teenagers and children. The author of the series is Matt Groening, who created a fictional dysfunctional family, consisting of ageless members - father Homer, mother Marge and children Bart, Lisa and Maggie. Individual episodes of the series gradually gained a half-hour footage and earned prime-time screenings. Since it first aired, The Simpsons has had hundreds of episodes and one feature film.
