The Birth of Ken Thompson (1943)

On February 4, 1943, Kenneth Thompson was born in New Orleans. Thompson graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, and, in his own words, had always been fascinated by logic and arithmetic. Kenneth Thompson, along with Dennis Ritchie, developed the UNIX operating system at AT&T Bell Laboratories. He also participated in the development of the B programming language, which was the predecessor of the C language, and the development of the Plan 9 operating system. At Google, Thompson also participated in the development of the Go programming language, and his other credits include the creation of the QED computer text editors.

Apple's acquisition of NeXT (1997)

On February 4, 1997, Apple successfully completed the acquisition of NeXT, which was founded by Steve Jobs after leaving Apple. The price was 427 million dollars. Together with NeXT, Apple also received a very favorable bonus in the form of Steve Jobs. Apple did very poorly in the mid-nineties and was practically teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, while Microsoft slowly began to dominate the market with its Windows 95 operating system. Among other things, NeXT brought salvation in the form of the foundations for the future Mac OS operating system, but it played a key role also Steve Jobs himself, who gradually accepted the role of interim and eventually regular head of Apple.
