In today's installment of our series on historical events in the field of technology, this time we will recall one single topic. Today, exactly six years have passed since Instagram managed to overtake the popular Twitter in terms of monthly users.

Instagram outgrew Twitter (2014)

On December 11, 2014, the social network Instagram managed to reach 300 million active users, overtaking Twitter, which at the time boasted 284 million monthly users. Kevin Systrom said in an interview with the media at the time that he was excited to reach this milestone and promised that the network will continue to grow in the future. Reaching the 300 million user milestone came roughly two years after Instagram was bought by Facebook. Instagram was founded in October 2010 by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, and in February 2013 it reported 100 million monthly active users. Instagram has gone through a number of different transformations since its inception. Originally, users could only upload photos in square format to it. Over time, Instagram allowed greater variability in uploaded images, added the option of sending messages or features such as InstaStories or Reels. The most followed personality on Instagram in July 2020 was footballer Cristiano Ronaldo with more than 233 million followers.
