Today marks the anniversary of the moment when the history of a new phase in Microsoft's business began to be written. In 1980, it signed an agreement with IBM to license the MS DOS operating system. But today we will also remember one of the more recent events, namely the introduction of the Amazon Echo smart speaker.

Microsoft's deal with IBM (1980)

On November 6, 1980, Microsoft and IBM signed an agreement based on which Microsoft was to create an operating system for the IBM PC, which was then emerging. At that time, Microsoft had already collaborated with IBM to implement the BASIC programming language into IBM PC computers, but they still lacked an operating system. The management of the then still small Microsoft knew about the company Seattle Computer Products, which at the time was developing an operating system called QDOS. So Microsoft suggested to IBM that QDOS could work great on the IBM PC. Word got around, Microsoft took over the development of the mentioned operating system and bought all the rights to it in July of the following year.

Amazon Echo (2014)

On November 6, 2014, Amazon introduced its small smart speaker called Amazon Echo. The speaker was equipped with the virtual personal assistant Alexa, and users could use it for example for voice interaction, controlling music playback, creating to-do lists, setting alarms and timers, streaming podcasts or even playing audiobooks. The Amazon Echo smart speaker was also able to report the weather forecast, provide traffic information or help control other elements of the smart home. It only offered Wi-Fi connectivity and lacked an Ethernet port.
