In our look back today, we're going to focus on Hewlett-Packard, twice. We will remember not only the day when it was officially registered in the US commercial register, but also when the company's management decided on a significant and radical restructuring and a fundamental change in the focus of the company's business.

Hewlett-Packard, Inc. (1947)

On August 18, 1947, the Hewlett-Packard company was officially registered in the American Commercial Register. It came nine years after colleagues William Hewlett and David Packard sold their first oscillator in their Palo Alto garage. The order of the names of the co-founders in the company's official name was allegedly determined by a coin toss, and the initially small company, founded by two Stanford University graduates, over time became one of the largest and best-known technology companies in the world.

HP ends mobile device production (2011)

On August 18, 2011, as part of the announcement of its financial results, HP announced that it is ending the production of mobile devices as part of a restructuring, and that it intends to focus on providing software and services in the future. The company thus ended up with, for example, tablets of the TouchPad product line, which were launched on the market only a month before the aforementioned announcement, and which at that time already had strong competition from Apple's iPad.
