In today's installment of our tech milestones series, we're once again celebrating an Apple-related anniversary. This is the introduction of the iPod mini that took place in early 2004.

iPod mini (2004)

On January 6, 2004, Apple introduced its iPod mini player. The sale of this small player was officially launched on March 20 of the same year, the iPod mini was equipped with a touch control wheel, which users could encounter, for example, on the third generation of the classic iPod. The first generation iPod mini offered 4GB of storage and was available in silver, green, pink, blue and gold. The second generation iPod mini was introduced and also released on February 23, 2005. The iPod mini, which enjoyed great popularity among users, was sold until September 7, 2005, when it was replaced by the iPod Nano. Both generations of iPod mini were quite similar in terms of design, with the exception of minor differences - for example, the first generation had gray control symbols on the click wheel, while the second generation iPod mini had these symbols color-coordinated with the player. For the iPod mini, Apple dropped the gold version, while the pink, blue and green variants were slightly lighter. The iPod mini was equipped with a Microdrive hard drive from Hitachi and Seagate, for the second generation, Apple also launched a variant with a storage capacity of 6GB. Like the iPod Nano, the iPod mini offered support for MP3, AAC/M4A, WAV, AIFF and Apple Lossless audio formats.
