The fashion industry is always trying to come up with something new and unique. And this is how Cinemagraph was introduced to the world. In 2011, the pair of photographers first demonstrated a hybrid between photo and video at New York Fashion Week.

How did they do that?

Both photographers used a relatively easy but lengthy process. They shot a short video and masked individual images using Photoshop until they created a photo of a model with her hair blowing in the wind. The plan was successful, they gained the attention of the media and clients.

After this success, several procedures appeared to create a similar effect. But the big breakthrough came with a specialized application. Today there are several of them. The Cinemagraph application from Flixel plays Prim on the iOS platform and now also on OS X. The basic iOS app is free and is used to record a short video, easily mask the moving part, apply one of several effects and then upload it to Flixel's servers for sharing. This created a small social network similar to Instagram and others.

The paid version is already much more sophisticated. Allows you to import pre-recorded video. This way you can have better control over repetition. There are two modes loop (round and round) and bounce (back and forth). You can export the result as a video up to 1080p resolution. But this format is a paid add-on, without it you only have 720p export available.

The version for OS X is even better. Thanks to greater performance, it is not limited by resolution, so you can also process video in 4K resolution. More effects are available. An interesting function is the possibility to export the result as a video or even as a GIF. However, the video in .h264 format is significantly better. When exporting, you can set how many times the video should be repeated, so you can export, for example, a 2-minute long loop.

And since a video demonstration is better than 1000 words, let's take a look at the process of creating Live Photos on the iOS version.

What with this?

The publication of the finished work is less of a problem. You can upload the finished creation to your gallery on flixel.com. Once uploaded, you can create an embed code and embed the live photo into your website. But if you want to share a live animated version of the photo on Facebook or Twitter, you're unfortunately out of luck for now. You can share a link to flixel.com with a preview image. You can upload an animated GIF to Google+, but it's at the expense of quality. The exported video is suitable for uploading to Youtube.

However, use outside the Internet is already becoming a very interesting option today. Today, a large part of advertising space is solved in the form of LCD or LED panels. Thanks to this, it is possible to use a live photo as an unconventional banner. The advantage is clear - it's new, little-known and a bit "freaky". A large number of people are subconsciously attracted to the live photo format.
