The operating systems iPadOS and macOS are equipped with a rather handy function Split View, with the help of which the screen can be divided into two parts to facilitate multitasking. In practice, we can work with two applications at the same time. This option is a matter of course for the mentioned systems and, for example, with iPads it is also the only way to actually indulge in multitasking - that is, at least until iPadOS 16 with the Stage Manager function is released. But we don't have such an option with iPhones.

iPhones are no longer so friendly in terms of multitasking and do not offer the Split View function. Of course, there is a relatively simple rationale for this. As such, mobile phones are simply not multitasking devices. On the contrary, they use a different approach – in short, one application occupies the entire screen, or we can quickly switch between them. However, this opens up a rather interesting discussion among apple growers. Does iOS deserve the Split View feature, or is it completely unnecessary in this case?

Split View in iOS

First of all, it is necessary to draw attention to one rather important fact. iPhones have significantly smaller screens than laptops or tablets, which is why Split View or multitasking in general may not make much sense at first glance. This fact is absolutely indisputable. When we imagine a split screen, it is immediately clear to us that twice as much content would not be rendered that way. In general, it can be summed up clearly – Split View in iOS may not be an ideal option that could work as we know it from the aforementioned iPadOS or macOS systems.

On the other hand, having such an option might not be harmful at all. Although it is of course true that in many cases the function would not be of much use, there are still situations where the Split View function would be more than appropriate. This can be clearly seen in one particular case. Although according to most users, dividing the screen on mobile phones does not make sense, the Picture in Picture (PiP) function, which allows us to work normally with the phone while watching multimedia content or having a video call via FaceTime, is still very popular. This very fact raises a fundamental question for apple users themselves, whether it would not be appropriate to be inspired by this and bring a certain form of multitasking, for example in the form of Split View, to apple phones as well.

Competitors split screen

On the contrary, the competing Android operating system has this option and therefore offers its users the option of splitting the screen, or displaying two applications at once. Let's leave the use of the function aside for now. As we mentioned above, in some cases the option could find great use. After all, as Apple users themselves argue, they can imagine Split View, for example, in combination with Messages, Calculator and other tools. How such a novelty could even look like is shown, for example, by the concept attached above.

Due to the limited use, Apple is probably resisting the implementation of Split View in iOS, which of course has its justification. As we mentioned above, the main negative is the significantly smaller screen, on which it is not possible to comfortably render two applications at once. How do you view the absence of this possibility? Do you think it would be worth adding it to iOS, or limiting it to Plus/Max models only, or do you think it is completely useless?
