We encounter laws and regulations in our daily lives. Each of us has surely solved a problem at work, with a complaint or with neighbors. In such cases, the current collection of laws is the best we can have at hand. We can either buy the paper edition or search the internet or buy the new app from Codefritters.

The application caught my attention right from the start. A screen that remotely resembled iBooks appeared with 3 codes:

  • Commercial,
  • Civil,
  • Labour Code.

Only the civil one is available with the application, and the rest can be purchased for the same price.

After opening the Civil Code, a screen appears with an overview of laws sorted into chapters, exactly as is customary in the Code. Above the table of contents is a search box that allows you to search the table of contents. Unfortunately, this search only takes into account the "titles" of the chapters, e.g. "Consumer contracts". To find the exact number of the paragraph, this number can be entered without the paragraph symbol and the search will find it for us. We can also notice one small trick in the content. It is a small magnifying glass on the top right, which is used to move to the beginning of the list and therefore to search. This feature will be a great boon for people who don't know that you can get to the top of the list by pressing your finger on the top clock bar, which I was until recently.

As soon as you find a paragraph that interests you, you select it with your finger and move to its exact wording. A full-text search works directly in the text of the law, and there is no problem in searching for a section of the law in an open chapter (the section is written on the iPhone by switching to the numeric keypad and holding your finger on the '&' sign, a menu appears and you select the section character) . So you write the text, click search and you will see 3 buttons in the middle of the screen. These are used for navigation in occurrences of the searched word. The up and down buttons will move you to the previous or next occurrence of the searched word. The button in the middle cancels the search and thus the marking of the searched term in the text.

Bookmarks work exactly as we would expect, but there is a small bug. If we are in one part of the book and we select a bookmark that is in another part, the program will write us a warning that the bookmark is in another part of the book and if we really want to go there. Unfortunately, the button below this message is only "Cancel". If we are in the right part of the book, then everything works as it should. I would also be inclined to display a "go to bookmark" button directly in the content to make navigation more friendly.

As for the size of the application, I was pleasantly surprised by its total size of 1MB. I thought the app only worked as a browser for the web interface, but after turning on "Airplane Mode" and turning off wi-fi, I found the app to be completely standalone, which I welcomed. I know that the iPhone is bought with an internet plan, but there are definitely times when we want to find out something in the law and the data connection is not the right nut.

I was also interested in how it would be with updates to the program, so I asked the author of the program directly. I got the answer right away. Program corrections and minor updates will be free of charge, but updates to the law will again be issued as the full text of the law in the form of new publications for the application. It will be exactly the same as when a new version of the law is published in paper form. That is, they will be paid for and accessible directly from the application.

Additional codes can be purchased on the application's home page, which can be accessed either by starting the program or by pressing the "Back" button on the content of the relevant publication. Unfortunately, it can sometimes happen that the purchase of the law may not be successful. If something like this happens to you, just restart your phone and buy the relevant publication again. The money will NOT be withdrawn a second time. Summary. The application is very useful and for me a clear purchase despite minor errors, which I think will be fixed in the next versions of the browser. The price of 1,59 Euros for one collection is not much. In the paper edition, I have seen codes from 80 to 150 CZK, with the difference that I will always have this application with me. For me it is a clear purchase.
