When Apple released iOS 11, one of the the biggest news should have been the presence of ARKit, which Apple presented at WWDC last year. Developer tools for the use of augmented reality should have been a real bomb, thanks to which developers will be able to push their applications one step further. Apple augmented reality they really believe and in the past year, company representatives tried to push her as much as possible. However, as it now turns out, this "hype" did not last very long, as the interest of developers in applications using ARKit is slowly declining.

The new information was brought by the company Apptopia, which looked for statistics on how the implementation of a using ARKit in new applications looks like From the graph below, it is clearly visible that the greatest interest in AR applications was in September, when Apple introduced the new iPhones. At that time, augmented reality was in the limelight, and a huge number of users were waiting to see what would eventually emerge from it. However, no big nugget came, although quite a few appeared practical and useful applications.

ARKit-installs

However, the use of ARKit by developers began to sink deeply and hit an imaginary bottom in November. In December, a weak increase appeared again, but it is hardly worth mentioning against the force of the previous fall. If we convert the graph to numbers, around 300 new applications using ARKit were released in September. In October it was around 200 and in November around 150. In December the number climbed to around 160 applications. According to the information so far, ARKit has been used in 825 applications in the entire App Store (in which there are approximately 3 million applications in total).

ARKit-Breakdown

Of these 825 apps, 30% are games, 13,2% are fun apps, 11,9% are the aforementioned useful apps, 7,8% are educational, and 7,5% are photo and video editing apps. A little over 5% is also occupied by miscellaneous items life-style applications and the remaining more than 24% belong to others. In the first three months of operation, it is not a big show. This genre has a lot of potential, but it will depend a lot on how developers approach it and whether they even have enough motivation to develop apps for ARKit. Augmented reality would need some globally successful application that would really spark interest in this type of entertainment.
