The T2 security chip that Apple has implemented in its newly announced, and also available since yesterday, Macs takes care of a really large number of things. In addition to being in charge of the operation and communication of Touch ID with the rest of the system, it also serves as an SSD disk controller or as a TPM module. Among other things, it also ensures that no line of code that has no business being involved in the operation of the Mac. And because of this feature, it is currently not possible to install Linux on new Macs.

The T2 chip ensures, among other things, the boot sequence of the system. In practice, it looks like when the Mac is turned on, the aforementioned chip gradually checks the integrity of all systems and subsystems that are active when the system boots. This check focuses on whether everything is according to factory values and whether there is anything in the system that does not belong there.

At present, the T2 chip enables running macOS and, if Boot Camp is enabled, also the Windows 10 operating system, which has an exception in the security enclave of the T2 chip given by a special certificate that allows the running of this "foreign" operating system. However, if you want to boot any other system, you're out of luck.

As soon as the T2 chip detects any suspicious activity, it disables the internal flash storage and the machine does not move anywhere. Security measures cannot be bypassed even by installing from an external source. However, there is a solution, although it is extremely difficult and also relatively demanding. Basically, it is about turning off (bypassing) the Secure Boot function, within which, however, you have to manually install the drivers for the SSD controller, because turning off Secure Boot disconnects the one in the T2 chip and the disk becomes unreachable. Not to mention the reduced security capabilities of this procedure. There have been some "guaranteed" instructions on how to install Linux on the latest Apple machines on reddit, if you are interested in this issue, take a look PULL.
