When Apple presented new operating systems at WWDC22, it somehow didn't include Lockdown mode in the presentation, even though it is a really useful feature. The company only informed about it through Press Releases. And how it looks like the iPhone will push its usability a little further. In the future, they will certainly replace even specially encrypted phones.

Lockdown Mode will bring a new level of security to iPhones with iOS 16, iPads with iPadOS 16, and Macs with macOS Ventura for those users who feel threatened by hacker attacks. These are typically backed by private companies developing tools that can hack into your iPhone and steal data from it. An ordinary mortal may not appreciate this (although in various political regimes it certainly does), as do politicians, journalists, civil servants, company employees working with sensitive data, etc.

Nothing is free

However, it should be noted that maximum privacy also requires a certain tax, so the device will lose some of its capabilities. Attachments can be blocked in Messages, no one but known contacts will be allowed to use FaceTime, you will have to authorize websites, you will lose shared photo albums, or you will not be able to install configuration profiles. But it doesn't end there, because Apple plans to continuously develop the feature and successfully defend against any attacks not only after the feature is released, but also in the future.

Apple's iPhones are generally considered to be relatively safe, also thanks to the fact that Apple creates not only hardware, but also software, and that you cannot install anything outside of the App Store on the device. Even so, there is still potential to watch. Android is far behind in this respect, even though some manufacturers are trying, for example Samsung with its Knox security. But there are also specialized phones on the market that boast an even higher layer of protection. And although you probably don't know these brands, they are even more expensive than the iPhone 13 Pro Max itself in the highest memory configuration.

Encrypted phone for more than 60 thousand

For example, a Bittium Tough Mobile 2 will cost you CZK 66, and it only runs on Android 9 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 processor and 4GB of RAM, and its display is 5,2". It is a phone designed and manufactured in Finland where its data is permanently secured with multi-layered security that is integrated into the hardware and source code. Apple probably won't be that far, but over time it can improve the mode so much that even such expensive specialized devices will come close, and they will lose sales. After all, not everyone is so demanding, so many can only be satisfied with what Apple provides them without spending once so much for such a solution.

Then there is also the GSM Enigma E2 push-button encrypted phone available on the Czech market, for which you will pay 32 thousand CZK and the manufacturer claims that it is currently the most secure phone in the world. It uses pioneering anti-eavesdropping techniques such as special smart card authorizations and unbreakable encryption techniques. It will be interesting to see how Lockdown mode grows. We should expect it immediately with the release of upcoming versions of new systems.
