Who doesn't know Word? This text editor from Microsoft has been an integral part of the MS Office suite for many years and is one of the most used software products in the world. Word is estimated to be actively used on more than a billion devices worldwide. In today's article, we will recall the arrival and beginnings of the MS Word application and its changes over the years.

The first version of Microsoft's text editor saw the light of day in October 1983. It was created by two former programmers from Xerox - Charles Simonyi and Richard Brodie - who started working for Bill Gates and Paul Allen in 1981. At the time of its creation, Word first it was called Multi-Tool Word, and it ran on computers with MS-DOS and Xenix OS. The first version of Word offered a WYSIWYG interface, mouse support and the ability to work in graphical mode. Word version 2.0 for DOS was released in 1985, the first ever Word for Windows was released in November 1989. The program was not very popular at first. At the time of the release of its first version for Windows, computer owners with this operating system were still a minority, and the software cost $498. In 1990, Microsoft for the first time grouped Word, Excel 2.0 and PowerPoint 2.0 into one software package intended for businesses. With the package of programs, Microsoft also thought of individual users, offering a more affordable variant called Microsoft Works. The company stopped distributing it in 2007, when it also started offering its Office at a significantly lower price.

However, the popularity of Microsoft's word processor gradually grew, both among owners of Windows computers and among Apple users, for whom Word became the second most used word processor after WordPerfect. Microsoft said goodbye to Word for DOS in 1993 with the release of version 6.0, and also changed the way each version of its text editor was named. Word gradually acquired new and new functions. When Microsoft released its operating system Windows 95, also came Word 95, which was also the first version of Word, developed exclusively for Windows. With the introduction of Word 97, a virtual assistant appeared for the first time - the legendary Mr. Clip - which helped users better navigate the application. Along with the gradual expansion of the Internet, Microsoft enriched its Word with functions that enabled collaboration over the network, and in the following years the company switched to the "Software and Service" model with significant support for services and functions in the cloud. Currently, Word can be used not only by computer owners, but also by tablets and smartphones with various operating systems.
