In July 2008, the iPhone 3G went on sale. Apple had a lot to do to meet all the high expectations associated with the new generation of its smartphone. Compared to its predecessors, the iPhone 3G offered, for example, the expected GPS or support for 3G networks. In addition, Apple supplemented its new smartphone with a brand new operating system, which included an improved Mail application, turn-by-turn navigation and, above all, App Store.

Beautiful new features

With the iPhone 3G, Apple temporarily said goodbye to aluminum and dressed its new smartphone in hardened polycarbonate. The iPhone 3G was available in black and white color variants. The 3G connectivity we mentioned in the introduction was a really noticeable improvement. Thanks to it, data transfer was significantly accelerated and signal quality was also improved. Equally welcome was the GPS function, which in 2008 was nowhere near as commonplace as it is today.

In addition, despite significant hardware improvements, Apple managed to introduce a relatively bearable price for the iPhone 3G. While the first iPhone was sold for $499, customers paid "only" $3 for the iPhone 8G in the 199GB version.

The iPhone 3G carried the model designations A1241 (World Edition) and A1324 (China Edition). It was available in black in 8GB and 16GB versions, in white only in the 16GB version and was equipped with a 3,5-inch Multi-Touch LCD display with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels. It supported operating systems iOS 2.0 to iOS 4.2.1, was powered by a 620MHz Samsung ARM processor and had 128MB of memory.

A million to wait

The iPhone 3G sold very well, and during the first weekend after its launch, Apple managed to sell a full one million units.

The company announced this fact to the world in an official press release. At the time, the iPhone 3G was sold in a total of twenty-one countries around the world, both in the United States and in Europe, Australia and Asia. "The iPhone 3G had a great launch weekend," Steve Jobs said in his official statement at the time. "It took 74 days to sell the first million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G has clearly had a fantastic worldwide launch," he added.

The success of the iPhone 3G is not surprising. The device brought features long desired by users, offering better performance and noticeably higher speed, all at a relatively affordable price.

Undoubtedly, one of the significant factors behind the popularity of the iPhone 3G was the availability of the platform to third-party developers. Users were excited about the App Store and literally took it by storm after its official launch. The iPhone 3G was also praised by the media, which often referred to it as a phone that offers "more for less".

Czech users certainly remember the iPhone 3G in one more context - it was the first iPhone in history that could be legally purchased in the country as well.
